Real Time - New Rule – Learn How to Take a Joke

GenjiKilpatrick says...

I don't hate you. Just the stupid opinions you express all the time.

"You're better than that". I know because you've made pretty thoughtful neutral comments on occasion.

[like on the Ann Coulter segment. You at least acknowledge BOTH sides. how liberal of you]

But yeah, you're just stupid.

You claim you aren't a racist.. and then tell me i'm inferior..
Which is THE definition of White Supremacy.. so..

But please, explain to me why is it that..

Blacks are "playing the victim".. but Conservatives aren't?

You got FoxNews, 300,000 Christian Churches, Christmas & Easter, Memorial Day & July 4th, Every President besides Clinton, Carter, Kennedy, & FDR..

Explain how you & @lantern53 aren't just making up problems to complain about?

The difference between you and I is that you HATE me but I don't hate you.
You will always be inferior to me all because you your hatred towards me. Self imposed inferiority. You are better than this. That is one of the problems with liberalism. Everyone is a victim.

Stop being a victim.

The same man who tells you that he does not want to see the government interfere in business-and he means it, and has plenty of good reasons for saying so-is the first to go to Washington and ask the government for a prohibitory tariff on his product. When things get just bad enough-as they did two years ago-he will go with equal speed to the United States government and ask for a loan; and the Reconstruction Finance Corporation is the outcome of it. Each group has sought protection from the government for its own special interest, without realizing that the function of government must be to favor no small group at the expense of its duty to protect the rights of personal freedom and of private property of all its citizens. - FDR

Halfway in, Prof. Wolff's latest monthly update is already fantastic. Nothing new, really. But his presentation of the (post-)FDR period is rather captivating. For an economist, the man really knows how to tell a story.

Edit: also, Matt Taibbi over at Rolling Stone finally published the sequel to his epic "Vampire Squid" story about the massive wrongdoings of the banking sector, and Goldman Sachs in particular. I haven't read it yet, but the last one was one of the most outrageous things I have read in the last 30 years. Truly epic shit.

Great video.

Not sure I agree about a return to the gold standard and their consumption based tax system, but it was definitely worth a watch.

Also, they spoke a lot about classical economists and even mentioned FDR, but not a mention of Keynes, or about how the most successful states (in terms of equality and citizen happiness) follow a more socialist stance

Richard Feynman on helping the Manhattan Project

chilaxe says...

That's interesting... I wasn't aware of that. It seems Nazi policies and distaste for "Jew Science" greatly slowed their nuclear research down, but they were still making fast progress on it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_nuclear_energy_project

"In the late 1930s, Germany might very well have had a 5-year lead on the West in [atomic weaponry]. ... [But] Manhattan did go forward, first and foremost as a counter to the feared German development [of atomic weaponry]." Google Books: How to lose a War.

The following thread isn't a primary source, but it's enough to make me think more research would probably find similar conclusions to the commenters:

Germany was working on nuclear bombs and reactors. German scientists Hahn, Meitner and Stassmann discovered the nuclear chain reaction in uranium in 1939. One reason Albert Einstein wrote FDR lobbying for an all out effort to make an atomic bomb was he got letter from German friends saying we know how to make atomic explosions for Gods sake hurry up. Einstein got through to FDR and we know were this ended up. In Germany they put their best man in charge a theorist named Werner von Heisenberg...

Understanding the National Debt and Budget Deficit

BansheeX says...

All I'm going to say is that this guy is completely wrong about the gold standard. This country was on gold for like 150 years and didn't collapse in an "inescapable deflationary spiral". That is nonsense trotted out by big government economist. In fact, the highest rates of GDP growth still remain gold standard years. The only reason the crash of 29 existed was because of the central bank's (which didn't exist prior to 1913) inflationary bubble in the 20s, which HAD to be corrected. And rather than letting it correct, Hoover and FDR resisted and intervened mightily. All prior recessions were allowed to run their course, this one wasn't. I mean, for god's sake, FDR was slaughtering livestock to prevent food prices from falling alongside wages. Is it any wonder the damn thing persisted for like 15 years?

He (and you, and the entire working population) has given the man many many trillions of dollars. Now that man is turning around and saying "you will not get your money back.

We aren't going to get it anyway. Like all government programs it started small and grew until today it is the biggest single item in the entire national budget - including Defense. The naked truth is that the government has promised too much to too many - and there isn't enough money to pay for it all. When you calculate how much in social programs the government has 'promised' versus what they are going to take in (IE 'Unfunded Liabilities'), the US is currently over 140 TRILLION DOLLARS in the hole.

SS - like all Federal social programs - should die in a fire - and do it overnight. Frankly, it is offensive that we ever got stuck with such anti-constitutional programs in the first place. Let it be a warning to all of us to NEVER give the government so much as one plugged nickel if it can possibly be helped. Sadly, our Grandparents and Great Grandparents sold us all down the river because they liked FDR instead of running him out of town on a rail like he deserved.

And they're at it again with Obamacare. If Obamacare isn't thrown out (like it should be) by the SCOTUS, then 20 years from now your kids will be cursing every mindless fool who supported it. We Conservatives are warning you right now based on simple history. All government programs start 'small' and then balloon - becoming unsustainable monsters. It is better to never allow these programs to start in the first place. Learn to ignore the leftist/progressive bullcrap saying we "need" the program. It's a lie. We don't need the programs. Quite the opposite. If you want to see the "future" of Obamacare (if it passses) then just look at Social Security today. Don't allow yet another layer of this federal garbage to get vomited on top of the layers that are already burying us.

Why the Stimulus Failed: A Case Study of Silver Spring, MD

quantumushroom says...

"Most economists" did not see the collapse coming, so why believe "most economists" know anything now?

The economic collapse was set in motion with the Free Houses for Poor People Act in the 70s, a liberal creation muscled-up during the Clinton years.

Government "guaranteed" bank loans to people who had no business owning homes, because it's "unfair" that not everyone has a house. So, half-coercion, half promising bailouts with taxpayer money.

Even in decades-old systems like Medicare, where you'd think there would be built-in watchdogs, we lose 60 billion A YEAR to fraud, waste and abuse, so how anyone sane thought a one-time scamulus would be closely monitored for fraud...

A similar Nude Eel scamulus was attempted in the 40s with little to no effect. FDR's bacon was only saved by WW2.
