heretic, my concerns with the account being unused until extremely recently relate to the problem of trolls. It isn't uncommon for aged / unused accounts to a site to be sold for the sake of lending an appearance of authenticity to a user with negative intentions. Your account being a full 3 years old with no visible activity until now made me think you could simply be a troll, looking to foment discord. Videosift has a fairly pronounced agnostic / secular bias, so this is exactly the sort of topic a troll account could easily manipulate to cause arguing.

Having seen your subsequent comments in this thread, I'm fairly confident you're not a troll. Still seems odd to me you waited this long to put the account to any evident sort of use, but that's certainly not a problem in and of itself. Hell, my account is over 11 years old with thousands of votes and hundreds of comments, and I've not bothered to upload a user pic.

There are definitely a lot of legal issues, the problem is the location. I can't be reasonably certain that a jury would convict the parents and the kid is a juvi at worst, again assuming you can get a judge in that area to convict.

I would suspect the worst damage that could be done would be for the thief to sue them in civil court for pain and suffering. That is something that might actually push through the system, given the lower standard needed for victory.

But yeah, the first things that went through my head when I watched this were:

A. What kind of family leaves a loaded 9mm laying around with an 11 year old in the house?
B. Shooting at a fleeing criminal is definitely a huge no-no in any state.
C. Where the hell did the other 11 rounds go? I mean, full metal jacket rounds fucking BOUNCE when they hit anything remotely hard. I've shot them before at an outdoor range and watched them hit the backing wrong and veer wide of the berm, I cringe at thinking where they were ricocheting with Billy the Kid popping them off like caps.

Just quoting this bit. Sure, there's 'privileges' that high-traffic members deserve. I don't believe helping with routine maintenance stuff that helps the site's overall quality without creating any real risk should be in that category.

I also don't believe the ability to downvote a comment or a video should be a privilege that requires a tremendous amount of membership time to earn either. Videos have proven time and time again to be a far better picture of what actually happened than the officers accounts. If I could trust an officer to tell the truth, I could be there with you. Unfortunately, they have proven at every turn that they are not trustworthy, so I think any rational person would stop trusting them and require they PROVE their contentions, and ignore anything they claim without proof. That's where I am.

Yeah, I am taking the word of the police that he pointed the gun at them. Maybe I shouldn't because out of the thousands of arrests and incidents that happen daily across the country, we have a few videos that show spurious methods used by a few officers. I mean, I get that right now the public trust in officers is at an all time low for good reason, but given the sheer number of things that this guy already did that day, I have to assume that they might not be lying in this case.

As far as the officer, like I said, maybe he overreacted. But I would rather we risk the death of a clearly severely mentally ill person than read about the 11 year old he shot because he was crazy and had a gun.

But I posted what I posted because I felt that just the video alone is not a clear picture of what was going on in this situation. I merely shared some of the facts that were printed by a major media outlet so that people could have the additional information to make up their minds about the video.
