Honest Question.

I'v heard about this pay equality for years....
But I've never seen the discrepancies.
In every job I've been in, the pay was always the same for men or women. Always.
Any job I've seen for friends or family, the pay rates were always exactly the same.

In more than 2/3 of the jobs I've held in my life, my bosses above me were women, not men.

My question is what parts of industry is the pay gap true, and is it as widespread as they are saying.

(because I'm not seeing it.)
I can see how most CEOs are male run, that is a slow change, but the majority of positions I see are equal pay.

You see, my nom de plume means i spread light where I go, whereas yours means you spread chaos, with the efficiency of a machine.

A machine spreading chaos is likely to believe everything it hears, without discerning the real facts, which are very easy to find.

But here is my question: does Kristen Schaal make as much money as Jon Stewart? If not, why? And was she part of the study? Ok, now i get it.

Well, my wife has worked competently at the blood bank for over 10 years. Her responsibilities increased, so her boss hired her an assistant with absolutely no training, and hired him (as an assistant) at the same pay rate she got after 10 years of being there (and being a department head)....so you can say they get the 'same pay for the same work', but she had to work competently for 10+ years to get that pay rate, he got it day one for nothing more than showing up with a penis....and he lasted less than a year.

EDIT: I also have to think that the uncontested under representation at the top means a HUGE discrepancy across the board. Consider that the top 5% receive 72% of the GDP, so a small under representation there is multiplied greatly when the math gets done. Lets say for argument sake that the remaining 95% are paid exactly equally, but women are completely missing in the top 5% (almost true). That means men would receive 86% of GDP, women 14%, even though women are actually 47% of the workforce and all paid equal pay for equal work.

It's a bit hard to come up with personal anecdotes to support or deny the claim, since our culture discourages sharing information about how much we get paid. I know the salaries of -very- few folks I've worked with.

That said, there are a few. My former manager had worked for the company for a number of years before I started there. She was the tech lead for our development team. About a year and a half after I started, she was promoted to manager over the team, and I got promoted to tech lead. In spite of the fact that she had worked there several times as long as I had, and was without question every bit as technically talented as I am, the difference in our salaries was nada. The only difference in our annual income was that she got a 15% bonus, where I got a 10% bonus.

It's certainly possible that there are other explanations for the discrepancy...working at the same company for long periods, while making you -far- more valuable to the company, leads to a -far- lower rate of pay compared to someone who moves around every 2-3 years. That could be involved (although it's -just- as nonsensical). But given the culture at this company, I would have no trouble believing that the core issue was her gender.

Yep, I ignore pretty much everything you say other than with the intention of ridiculing it.

And I'm basing my statement on your inability to understand basic facts, which you have aptly demonstrated time and again. I can't remember what you do (cop or something?) but the ability to learn and accept reality is part of most jobs, neither of which you seem capable of.

followup- I talked to my wife about this, and she told me they hired a woman when her male assistant left. They hired a woman that had experience at the job (recall the male had no experience). She has now been there well over a year, and she still makes over $2 an hour LESS than the starting pay for an untrained man for the exact same job.

Do they get paid the same...probably not.
Do they do the same job?...No. No where close.
Can you understand that...likely not.

That said, if you count only $ per second they're actually ON TV, we might find she gets paid more.

I doubt she would, she isn't the host of the show. You'd have to compare her job position to a male counterpart doing the same job. Like one of the other comedians that work on the show doing little segments.

I wouldn't expect her, or any other male on the show to make the same wage as Jon.

Then why don't you suggest your overlords set up a commission to set the pay rates for every citizen in their country? That's what they want to do, anyway.

I was the one who asked the question, because I generally don't see evidence of it... As stated at the top of this post.

Because I'm not personally familiar with a working position where both a male and a female both work the same job, and don't get paid the same amount.

What side of this discussion are you on?
