Fantastic Toy Commercial For Future Girl Engineers

We're GoldieBlox, a toy company out to show the world that girls deserve more choices than dolls and princesses. We believe that femininity is strong and girls will build the future — literally. Our founder, Debbie Sterling, is a Stanford engineer who decided last year that girls need more choices than the pink aisle has to offer. She developed GoldieBlox, an interactive book series + construction set starring Goldie, the kid inventor who loves to build. This year, we wondered what we could do to showcase the amazing inventive power that girls have. So...we might have recruited three young girls and that guy who made OK Go's famous Rube Goldberg machine to turn an average home into a massive, magical contraption. -yt

Girls.
You think you know what we want, girls.
Pink and pretty it's girls.
Just like the 50's it's girls.

You like to buy us pink toys
and everything else is for boys
and you can always get us dolls
and we'll grow up like them... false.

It's time to change.
We deserve to see a range.
'Cause all our toys look just the same
and we would like to use our brains.

We are all more than princess maids.

Girls to build the spaceship,
Girls to code the new app,
Girls to grow up knowing
they can engineer that.

Girls.
That's all we really need is Girls.
To bring us up to speed it's Girls.
Our opportunity is Girls.
Don't underestimate Girls.

Girls, all I really want is girls
And in the morning it's girls
Cause in the evening it's girls

I like the way that they walk
And it's chill to hear them talk
And I can always make them smile
From White Castle to the Nile

Back in the day
There was this girl around the way
She liked by home-piece M.C.A.
He said he would not give her play
I asked him, "Please?" he said, "You may."
Her pants were tight and that's ok
If she would dance I would D.J.
We took a walk down to the bay

I hope she'll say, "Hey me and you should hit the hay!"
I asked her out she said, "No way!"
I should have probably guessed their gay
So I broke North with no delay
I heard she moved real far away
That was two years ago this May
I seen her just the other day
Jockin' Mike D. to my dismay

Girls - to do the dishes
Girls - to clean up my room
Girls - to do the laundry
Girls - and in the bathroom
Girls, that's all I really want is girls
Two at a time I want girls
With new wave hairdos I want girls
I ought to whip out my girls, girls, girls, girls, girls!

I understand the sentiment, but what is preventing girls from playing with already existing construction type toys like Lego?

And secondly, isn't it strange that the advertised toy in the video has the same look and feel of those 'evil' "pink aisle" toys?

"So...we might have recruited three young girls and that guy who made OK Go's famous Rube Goldberg machine"

Would have nice if they could have found a woman to build the machine. It's a nice sentiment, but all they're showing me is these girls playing on a toy someone else built. But I really hope this helps; I think the princess mentality hasn't done society any favors.

Here's an depressing question that keeps running through my head: What do you suppose the ratio of fictional female engineers/hard-scientists to real female engineers/hard-scientists is? what about male?

Girls, all they really want to do is make videos that are color coordinated and absolutely fabulous with a message that their infatuation with color coordination isn't part of the problem and they don't stop talking seriously they talk more than men and they blame men for the current zeitgeist just because we have beefy arms and are able to protect human civilization from other humans that would BURN DOWN LIBRARIES and bring you back to the rape standard.

Boys, is all you really want is boys? I'll wear pink. It's ok. Shhhhhhhhh... it's oooookaaaaaaay. (I'll wear panties.)

OK, so everyone can comment all they want about camera cuts, who did what in the commercial, whatever the f#ck you want to say tear this apart, deconstruct it or knock it down. But I'm a sixteen year veteran of the toy industry, and I see potential. I see something here that moves past the crap that Mattel and Hasbro, Jakks Pacific, Spinmaster, New Bright, Jada, MGA and others cram down the throats of kids at places like Wal-Mart, Target and Toys R Us. I'm guilty of being a part of that machine, I admit it. But I'm not necessarily happy about it, and seeing things like this makes me even less happy about it. Especially that I now have a 4 year old daughter. So I truly hope that this thing takes off. I wish them the absolute best of luck, I'm going to be voting regularly for them to get the spot, and I look forward to buying their product.

I think what they're saying is that those Lego-type toys are marketed pretty heavily to boys whereas this is aiming squarely at girls. And I don't think they have a problem with the color pink per se--I think they have a problem that the majority of the toys in the "pink aisle" are trying to socialize girls to be homemakers (Eazy-bake ovens, etc.) or passive fashion models (princess outfits). This toy, on the other hand, is promoting girls as active inventors while also allowing them to retain their femininity (ie you can be cute AND smart).

As the father of a 2 1/2 year old daughter, I approve their attempt. I'll be interested in seeing how the final product turns out.

Parents. That's what.

I occasionally will see a girl in a store (or wherever) ask her mom or dad a question about how something works and their response is usually something along the lines of "oooh, look at that pretty [insert 'girl' thing here]"

Holy cow the sift has turned into the most "deconstruct this video to prove the point it's making is self-defeating" site I've seen since YouTube.

On a personal note: I banned all princess movies. If my 2 girls want to watch a movie, I have to first approve of it, and watch it with them the first time. And I make it a constant point to let them know they don't have to be some sissy princess girly girl. I take them out, let them play with sticks and mud, and we do crafts at home, make food together, make ice cream, play with fire, and watch MythBusters and occasionally forget the "do no try at home part".

But, I also let them paint their nails and wear pretty clothes. But "princesses" they will not be.

maatcsays...

Only thing that bothers me, is that the packaging is still kinda pink-purplish, as if Goldieblox did not dare to follow through 100% with their brave concept.
But if that is the price to get a few princessy girls to check out their toys, so be it.

I just hope this trend goes both ways.
Your willingness to let your kids cross these artificial gender barriers is great way to check your tolerance level. I have two boys and a girl, and just as I think it is perfectly fine for my daughter to pick up a hammer, I let my boys paint their nails or put on a dress if they want to.

They are kids, let them have fun while they are still young. That way they have a strong foundation for when they are faced with intolerance later on in life.

Is this a bad time to point out that Rube Goldberg machines are, by nature, examples of terrible engineering?

But I love the motivation here. Princess programming is highly disturbing and the helpless girls (who never become women) it produces are a waste of space.

GoldieBlox is being sued for the use of the Beastie Boys song in this clip. Turns out in his will Adam Yauch specifically asked that their works not be used for commercial purposes and the band('s lawyers) are honoring that request. Goldieblox will probably try to argue Fair Use but I think they're likely f'd because the primary purpose of this video is to advertise their products (the social commentary is incidental), which violates one of the factors of analysis the courts use in determining infringement.
