Panorama: Scientology and Me

Scientology isn't actually a recognised religion in the UK, after Hubbard accused the prime minister Harold Wilson and all European Psychiatry of a grand conspiracy against Scientologists. This report by the BBCs excellent Panorama investigative programme tries to understand why Scientologists want that Judges decision decades ago reversed. Ironicly, the 'church' prooved the presenters point that they use intimidation and espionage to slander outsiders - by attacking the reporter during and after. A few links to explain the aftermath of this documentary:

Man, Juilette Lewis too? Scientology=instant loss of respect.

I've always wondered how they get to these celebs, perhaps they hire 4 or 5 people to ruin the lives of the paparazzi or something.

At any rate, anything that gets their tactics exposed like this deserves respect. Thank you, John Sweeney.

I despise Scientology with a passion matched only by the heat of a thousand suns. Too bad this wasn't longer, it's not often that big shows investigate Scientology, at least not anymore.

pyrex and BRM... highly annoying men in minivans are now following you and going through your garbage. Just FYI. Also, the world will know tomorrow that you violate various decency laws in your spare time.

Also, Scientology is a wonderful and pleasant religion...

I always thought celebrities became scientologists for some money/power reason, or that they were stupid/fucked up enough to believe that shit... but it kind of makes sense that they might be being blackmailed into promoting it. I mean who knows what John Travolta has done in his past let alone Tom Cruise. Then the rest follow? I don't know. WHY WILL SMITH, WHY???????

I know a number of ex-Scientologists, and asked them how they got into the cult in the first place. Some said it was just something to do - at first. Then the cult would work on them to do more courses, and "move up the bridge" (Scientology has their own dictionaries - as they say, if you're allowed to define the words, you can win any debate). Some had even signed the "Billion Year Contract", supposedly binding them to the "Church" of Scientology not just for this life, but for a billion year's worth of reincarnations.

But the Hollywood types get a completely different brand of Scientology. The "Celebrity Center" shown in the film is a former luxury hotel with free drinks, massages and all the ass-kissing any up-and-coming actor could desire. Hubbard specifically told his members to go after "opinion leaders", people with followings who could bring in new recruits or (in Hubbard's charming phrase) "raw meat".

Anyway, the more you learn about Scientology, the more disturbing it is. Everything the critics claim is proven - usually in Hubbard's own handwriting.

The faster ScienTOMology is destroyed the better. They almost don't need critics because almost everything they do/say incriminates the cult far better than any outside observer could. Their time is almost over...

I was half-expecting the Scientology guy Tommy to start referring to himself in the 3rd person..."Tom is not happy. You want Tom angry? You got Tom angry buddy boy. Real angry, right now Tom is." TOM.REAL ANGRY.RIGHT NOW. COMING TO YOU IN SUMMER 2007.

something about their "discussion" tactics makes me think sometimes it is best to just punch someone in the face

I know it's a joke, but this is NEVER the way to win against them, and his yelling at them was not the way either.

The way to win against these absolutely evil money grabbing horrors is to simply stack up the evidence, present it clearly, rationally, never lose your cool (obviously very hard when faced with their kind of horrendously over the top interrogation), and always treat them with respect etc. Never give them any ammunition for a slander attack such as this reporter did.

It's horrendous to think of all the pain this 'church' has caused.

I wonder if anyone else gets complete chills and shivvers when John is yelling, and Tommy is stood there repeating, in the same monotonous drawl, "brainwashing is a crime....brainwashing is a crime....brainwashing is a crime....brainwashing is a crime.."

I consider myself solid and tough from a mental standpoint, but i honestly think if i'd sat through that length of time of seeing graphic images and indoctrination, and then heard that voice repeating the same thing over and over, i'd have run from the room.

Anyone wailing on John for reacting in that way hasn't really thought the entire thing through. I thoroughly salute his mental control and restraint.
