PS4 Announcement - Abridged Version

For those that missed it, here's the short, abridged version of the PS4 announcement last night.
Njalsays...

Yeah, it's funny because it's true
The only somewhat interesting part is the streaming of games to try them out before you buy them and the game Watch Dogs, which might also be shit, and is released on the PC so what do I need a PS4 for..

dhdigitalsaid:

i think that is pretty accurate.

VoodooVsays...

does the PS4 play games? you know...the sole reason anyone would want to buy one?

in fairness, I have the same complaint about the Xbox and Wii. In their feverish scramble to add extra crap to their consoles that no one wanted or asked for, they seem to be neglecting games.

RFlaggsays...

I was underwhelmed to say the least during the presentation... Media Molecule got the biggest applause of the night. Got excited for a moment when Blizzard came out, then was let down by the Diablo 3 announcement, was hoping for something more exciting, but even if they release Titan on anything but PC they won't announce it at all until Blizzcon so not sure what I was expecting there... and yeah, the guy coming out to say we'll announce the next Final Fantasy at E3 was a cheap shot. And nothing really new from Destiny. I think the whole event was best summed up by XBox's Major Nelson who said something along the lines of "Have an event announcing your new console and not show it, that's one way of doing it."

I use my PS3 mostly for Bluray (it was by far the cheapest way into Bluray at the time) and Netflix (as my 360 sucks on Netflix on my network for some reason) and rarely games, that's what my PC is for and 360... It was nice to see it is indeed using x86 as rumored, and I was a little lost on why they didn't at least mention that it does have a Bluray drive during the event... something they mentioned in a followup press release as if they forgot...

The question now is, does Microsoft show early or wait for E3 for the whole show? They could do an pre-E3 show and show how it should be done... This was just badly handled. I mean 2 hours for what could have taken 30 minutes tops... and I still would have at least showed the system.

Njalsays...

Wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft wait with an announcement until E3 and take over the whole expo. It would certainly be the highlight of the whole event and it's not like it would get lost along with all the other news coming out of E3.
E3 2013 would be all about the next xbox and it's games and whatever sony comes out with wouldn't even matter.
If the Sony conference was all about dragons Microsoft would slay those dragons.

I'm really surprised so many people actually give that big a shit about how the console actually looks. Seriously, how often do you sit and just stare at the console itself?

I've found myself migrating from my 360 to the PS3, it's just a better system for gaming. You can buy most new releases online (Games on Demand is pathetic), you don't have to pay for MP, you don't have to put up with MS's constant dashboard changes that are consistently awful, nor put up with superfluous BS like Avatars and the Welcome screen.

The only thing I don't like is the controller, and the PS4's controller looks great (except the stupid Share button), so I'm quite excited for the PS4, but also keen to see what MS will be offering and if they'll cock it up

VoodooVsays...

The problem is that consoles these days don't have anything really new to offer except for more processing power which people really don't give a shit about as much anymore. The Wii proved that you can make a ton of money without having the best GPU/CPU.

You also had this phenomenon of consoles becoming more popular than PCs. But wait, they achieved this because the console added all these extra features...in other words, Consoles started to beat PCs....by becoming more PC-like. Wait a minute...that's not exactly beating PCs then is it?

Especially since I can still do more with a PC than I can do with a Console and I don't have to be restricted by what MS/Sony/Nintendo lock me into.

With the advent of Media PCs...the need for consoles have been lessened unless you specifically want to play a game that is an exclusive for a console.

What people really want is convergence, which is exactly what console makers don't want. I think people are sick of having to buy multiple consoles to play the games they want. When in reality, a PC can do it all and not be limited by these artificial restrictions.

dhdigitalsays...

I like the idea of a touch pad on the controller that isn't a gimmick (i.e. wiiu controller, which as of now can only use one touch screen).

If I could toss all my home theater crap in a closet so I never have to see it again, I would. (if I didn't have to fill my closet with snowgear I would have done this.) But I look at a spending $600- $800 on a console as crazy. If I'm going to buy something I need the games, better cords, more controllers, some memory card i won't use, more games, strat guides, etc.. Gosh that is expensive, who does that?!

Then I look to my "new" computer which it will be used to surf here and some games --that's it. It currently sits in boxes. The new box is halfway built, still lacking a mobo/ram/psu and I have about $800 invested in it. Probably going to dump easily another 400 to 500 in it, but that okay in my messed-up-I-need-this-to-live-mind.

because that is sane.

There was a time when I was excited about the future of gaming. I mean, I'm still excited, but it's taking way longer than it should... When the most exciting game to come out in 10 years is Minecraft (IMHO), that's when I call shit on the entire industry and realize that's just the shitty way that the shitty world works. Things become less awesome the more that everyone gravitates towards said same things. Companies see the money being generated and the only return on interest is to keep doing that thing that people say (more like "think") they like about the game(s).

As a consumer I think: Big business is fucked and always will be. I don't want to be marketed to. I don't want people to anticipate what I desire. When that shit starts happening, I'm done and I no longer desire. Because what I desire most is freedom from the constraints of this awful, mind-numbing, driven-into-the-ground system control. Stop, just stop trying to figure us out and by design minimize our being.

Trends are like two sides of an ascending roof coming to meet in the middle. On one side are publishers and on the other side are developers & consumers. When the two sides meet in the middle, business happens. BUT development and consumers (developers are consumers, thus are driven by the same motivations, albeit with the ability to make change) want to keep ascending to a new spot... AND PUBLISHING WON'T LET THEM GO HIGHER BECAUSE THAT IS WHERE UNCERTAINTY LIES. NOT. PROFIT.

Profit. Profit. Profit. YAY FOR THE FUTURE.

Jinxsays...

I waiting to see what Valve's media PC/console will look like. Its interesting that they consider their main rivals in the contest for the living room to be Apple and not Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo.

Truckchasesays...

Consoles are turning into the legacy media providers; the only thing they can do to get you to buy one is provide platform-locked content. There is nothing they're doing here that couldn't be done as well or better with a PC. (or Mac if the software was there) Like Jinx says, I'd much rather have an open platform like Valve's idea.
