Neil deGrasse Tyson on Empathy,Intelligence and Other Stuff.

Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, American astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium, discusses the human-animal connection from a scientific standpoint.

I love Tyson, I love what he says in this clip, but shame on him for doing a video for the hypocritical cult that is PETA.

PETA stands for complete animal liberation. That means no pet ownership (a major component of the video clip), no humane livestock ownership (also in the video) and no scientific testing (something I am sure Tyson would be in favor of).

They love to have people think they just want humane treatment for animals (as any right-minded human should) but they are for much more than that.

As much as I agree with what he says, I can't upvote anything connected to PETA.

This man is a super star. I highly recomend his book 'The Pluto Files', where he got death threats from kindergarden kids, scribbled in crayon, over the demotion of pluto to a dwarf planet. Futher more, in
juxtaposition (in support of the demotion), The following comes from
astro'physicist Howard Brenner:

"F##k pluto, it was a sorry excuse for a planet anyhow, good riddance to bad solar trash, but now that the name is free, why not rename Uranus Pluto and get rid of all that grade school snickering."

Very entertaining book and a nice sift

OH Fuck off. They believe and fight for something that will never happen...if they cause pets and farm animals to be treated better as a result than I say more power too them.

Look at the IRA, a lot of what that group did was abhorrent, but they were fighting against an abhorrent situation and a lot changed. It's not enough to look at what a group says because they're a small group, look at what they drive for change and agree with them when they're right about something...like animal testing.

Same with Malcolm X, there's tons of these examples throughout history, it's not Black and White...all shades of gray.

The story he's talking about is "They're Made of Meat" by Terry Bisson, 1990 Omni Magazine.

I remember this story well.

I get where you are coming from Skeeve and I agree with your judgement of PETA, although I would add their terrorist (terrorist-ic?) actions also.
That being said, this is still a great clip and N.DG.T is a hero of mine, so I'll upvote and hope PETA doesn't get any encouragement from that vote.

They are right about animal testing!?

I hope you don't have any loved ones who take insulin for diabetes, because without animal testing and animal products they would be DEAD. And that includes Marybeth Sweetland, Senior Vice President of PETA.

Animal testing is the basis of all modern medical research and has led to treatments for childhood leukemia, hemophilia, meningitis and many, many more diseases. So if you think they are right about animal testing, sign yourself up to be an AIDs vaccine tester.

As for them being a small group so it doesn't matter what they say, that's garbage. They have 2 million members, millions more supporters (most in the dark about their agenda) and bring in more than 30 million dollars a year. And even if they were a small group, that doesn't make them harmless. By comparison, Al-Qaeda is estimated to have only 200-300 operatives and may have trained as few as ten-thousand insurgents, should we ignore the bad things they do because "they believe and fight for something that will never happen"?

Shades of gray exist, but there are also plenty of animal rights organizations to support that aren't terrorist supporting hypocrites.

Again Fuck Off. You don't know shit and you haven't done any fucking research about how many animals have been tortured and killed. Animal testing has done good things as well...THATS A SHADE OF FUCKING GRAY LIKE I WAS TALKING ABOUT!

You're just a moron painting them with one fucking brush...like all their supporters and even members agree with everything they do. I know plenty of people who have worked at PETA and they never agreed with everything they do but they have been a source of some good and have brought the plight of animal torture and maiming to the forefront of public debate.

If you can't understand these BASIC FUCKING CONCEPTS Than I will just fucking Kill you! I WILL FUCKING EAT YOUR HEART!

Skeevesays...

1. No, you're missing the point. Being "the source of some good" is not reason enough to support them. If we all followed that logic we should have supported the Soviet Union because they were less sexist than the USA, or the Nazis because they started the first anti-smoking campaigns. Because an organization does something good does not excuse them from the harm they do. There are a plethora of animal welfare associations that do not have blood on their hands. Support them, not PETA.

2. Thanks for the outburst in your last sentence. You prove the long-standing belief that PETA supporters would rather murder a human than see animals disrespected.

3. As I have just invoked Godwin's Law I will refrain from further discussion, good day.

Leaving aside Yogi and Skeeves little tiff , the start of this video does raise an interesting question in terms of our assessment of ourselves as "intelligent". Is there a line that is crossed which marks a species as intelligent?

For me, I think our intelligence comes from our ability to both understand and communicate abstract concepts, particularly things like math. Most of the research I've seen into communication with other potential intelligences focuses on the conveyance of our understanding simple mathematical concepts like arithmetic, geometry, prime numbers and so on. I think based on that, we would be able to eventually communicate with another intelligent species, even starting with something as simple as

..
...
.....
.......
...........
.............
.................

That demonstrates we know what the first few primes are.

I don't believe there is another animal on earth that can understand and communicate these concepts

apart from mice and dolphins obviously, but they don't want to talk to us.

That said, there may be some fundamental property of primes or some other universal mathematical pattern we simply haven't recognised yet (it may only be apparent in a different base notation or when looked at n-dimensionally) that is considered the universal equivalent of 1+1=2. In which case, we'll appear remarkably dense to other intelligences.
