I must admit this issue has me in a quandary. Gun free? Yet the criminals will still be armed. All armed? Yet running the risk of more mass shootings and indiscriminate murder. Speaking for myself, I would rather be armed than not. However, I am totally in favour of banning high velocity automatic weapons, high capacity clips, and certain types of ammunition (dum-dum etc.) There should be increased security checks, and maybe - apart from special circumstances - the limiting to one gun per household. These seem common sense measures to me, which could, hopefully, keep all parties satisfied.

As I understand it after the President's speech, the government will provide incentives for schools to hire resource officers. These are armed police officers. So am I right in understanding that the suggestion by the NRA to do this, which was met with great derision two weeks ago, is now acceptable since the President recommended it yesterday?

I for one am glad that he and the NRA are in agreement on this point.

I think interpreting resource officer = armed guard is a bit of a stretch, but I'll admit that was my initial reaction too. I interpreted it as "I'll leave it up to the individual school to decide what they want"

which is probably the right thing to do.

As I write this, Immediately to my right, on the sift, is an ad that says "Obama says, Ban Guns!" say no!"

So the strawman is still standing. Nowhere, no how is anyone...ANYONE going after anyone's guns. Yet in the minds of certain people.....

If it weren't for the fact that hundreds, if not thousands of innocents would be probably be killed, I'm to the point of saying that if these assholes think the gov't is tyrannical, let them revolt. Let's see how far they get, they don't have popular support, they don't have military support. If you want to live free or die and you think you aren't free, then put your money where your mouth is asshole and do something about it.

I'm sick of the whining and the conspiracy theories. put up or shut up. They think gov't is tyrannical, but they do nothing, guns were unlawfully confiscated during Katrina, but they did nothing.

We've got people who honestly think the recent shootings were all staged. Prove it or shut the fuck up. Talk is cheap.

I hear a lot of whining from people like this, but not any action.

I don't see how this is terrible or fear. They are using the same tactics (ie kids) to pass stricter gun control legislation. The assault rifle ban and magazine clip restriction would have done nothing to stop the shooting but people want it anyway because then they can feel like they did something.

If they said "YOUR KIDS WILL BE MURDERED BECAUSE THE PRESIDENT WONT LET YOU HAVE GUNS. ARE YOU GOING TO STAND BY AND WATCH YOUR CHILDREN DIE?" I could see those channels being invoked.

You guys couldn't be anymore biased in this issue.

The gov't does everything but little tiny steps, until they get what they want. Their goal is to take all guns off the street. It may take them forever, it will never work (since they have tried to eliminate drugs and failed) but the bottom line is...criminals don't obey the law. All this does is penalize the law-abiding.

VoodooVsays...

too bad we don't have some way of...collectively deciding who will lead and be our voice on a periodic basis

oh wait...

When a vote doesn't go the way you wanted it to, That's not tyranny, quite the opposite in fact

You'll have your chance again in a few years

"Guns are used for self defense and protection"

Surely that's a myth easily dispelled using basic statistics?

- Criminal + accidental vs. self defense?
- Crimes attempted but averted by a firearm?

If it was easy then it would have been done.

Um... well, lets see... Barak Obama is the President of the United States, arguably the most powerful nation in the world. So his children would make excellent targets for anyone who considers the USA a threat. That would be a heck of a lot of people.

Really harlequinn, you need this stuff spelled out for you? I didn't notice any sarcasm tag...

harlequinnsaid:

What difference would that be?

harlequinnsays...

You haven't answered the question to the level I'm asking it.

To make it clearer let me first make a suggestion.

If I asked someone in the street "whose children are more important - the president's or your own?" - I believe the answer would be that their own children are more important.

So really, what is the difference between his children and someone else's?
