Mom Said Devil Made Her Decapitate Her 3-Week-Old Son

SAN ANTONIO — An aunt of a Texas woman accused of beheading her 3 1/2-week-old infant son says the woman had been in and out of a psychiatric ward.
Authorities say Otty Sanchez used a knife and two swords to dismember the child and ate some body parts before stabbing herself and slicing her own throat. The 33-year-old is hospitalized and is charged with capital murder. Police said she does not yet have a lawyer.
Gloria Sanchez said Monday that her niece had been "in and out of a psychiatric ward" and that a hospital called several months ago looking to check up on her. She said Otty was "not in her right mind" and that the family is devastated.
Otty Sanchez is being held on $1 million bond.

God did it...

Edit:

Actually, this is symptomatic of people that cannot accept responsibility for their own actions. They look to something "higher" that they can pin it on. No, the devil did not make her do it, she just did it, her choice, her responsibility. Like god also does nothing, the devil does nothing.

Wow. Really? This is clearly someone with mental *health issues. Likely schizophrenia.

Out of respect I won't downvote that comment. But that's a very short-sighted view on the world when someone is clearly struggling with a horrible, horrible illness. It's a terrible shame, all this.

This isn't about "accepting responsibility", it's about a psychotic break. Would you say the same thing to a man with a shattered pelvis to "just get up and walk", and when he doesn't, he's clearly not taking "personal responsibility" in his life for not being mobile and able to work?

@ gwiz665 - Someone that is able to cut off a baby's head and then eat parts of it's body has no concept whatsoever of "responsibility". You might not believe in god or the devil but, to her, obviously, they are very real. I think you're on the outside looking in. Her world is most likely very different from yours (I hope).

@ brycewi19 - I think your man with a shattered pelvis analogy is wrong because gwiz665 said: "this is symptomatic of people that cannot accept responsibility for their own actions." This woman committed an act and said someone else made her do it (out of psychosis or lack of responsibility is beside the point). So, your shattered pelvis man would have had to jump off a building and then say the devil made him do it. Not saying I disagree, just saying I don't think your analogy works.

@brycewi19 You are of course right, she must have suffered some form of psychotic break, since no sane person can do what she did and live with themselves (although she did try to kill herself afterwards, which indicates remorse; ie. not a psychopath).

Still, the difference between a person like Son of Sam saying a demon dog told him to kill and saying "satan made me do it" is a defense to avoid personal responsibility like "I was just following orders". To have actually done this does indicate some form of mental break or illness, but the belief in a god or devil in itself is indicative of a mental break, and should be treated as such (although the severity certainly is varying, hopefully none or few as severe as hers).

Like rottenseed says "This is the act of a crazy person, but a talking bush.." We should not encourage an ongoing mental illness, even though it works out well for some and disastrous for others.

I know, I'm usually so awesome and cool that my comments get an automatic thumbs up... at least my mom thinks so...

Schizophrenia was my first thought as well. The voices in a schizophrenic's mind can eventually become unbearable. If the mother in this case was not religious then she would have some other name than "god" for the voices. It's possible that the baby seemed evil to her or she had to release the demon inside. If she felt remorse afterwards then it was during a moment of clarity.

Well it's either God™ (BTW, he tried it once-then realized he was coming off of a high), the Devil™ (BTW,the devil is suppose to tempt not tell), the Schizophrenia (does it happily), the Mom (does it, but the switch is off), or the person that never gets blamed yet we all know did it, Cthulhu™ (always tells you to do it, in His dreams...).

Schizophrenia is the only one making any sense here.

Deuteronomy 28:53-57 (also Lev 26:29)

Because of the suffering that your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you. Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own brother or the wife he loves or his surviving children, and he will not give to one of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all he has left because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of all your cities. The most gentle and sensitive woman among you - so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot - will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter the afterbirth from her womb and the children she bears. For she intends to eat them secretly during the siege and in the distress that your enemy will inflict on you in your cities.
