The "hazard lights as thank you" is also pretty common in Ireland. Of course, driving in Ireland is generally pretty awful.

Most semi and bus drivers will also blink their hazards as a thank you in North America.

In these parts we just use the ol' handwave out the window. (To avoid miscommunication it is important to extend all fingers.)

Driving in Oahu was awesome, seemed to be very polite and laid back. California... Not so much...

Also, some of us in Canada do the hazard-light-thank-you, too.

Likewise in England.

They also honk their horn twice in quick succession as a way of saying thank you. I didn't know that when I first started driving here, so the first time it happened to me after I let a guy in I actually turned to my wife and said, "WTF is his problem, I let him in!"

I think you have to view rush hour on a Tokyo subway to really understand just how amazingly polite most Japanese are.

I sincerely doubt North Americans, on average, could keep their sanity.

In Sweden they do a variation on the hazard lights: blink once left, right, left (or similar). It looks nice.
