Quoth the FAQ for convenient reference:

#3. Please do not post pornography or "snuff" films (which we define as the explicit depiction of loss of human life displayed for entertainment).

Note: The presence of human fatality is acceptable and not considered "snuff" if presented as a limited portion of a lengthy educational, informative news report or documentary. Our definition of "snuff" does include but is not exclusive to any short clip in which a human fatality occurs whether or not any victims are actually visible on camera.

Sounds like a yes, but I'm never sure about these things. This is why I stick to cat videos!

I think this qualifies - it's a graphic depiction of someone being killed- that's the only thing it's designed to show. I say

Oh, crap, is this the part where everyone who comments gets assassinated mid-senten

So the person who took the picture of this gets the Pulitzer prize. And the guy who shot the video gets kicked off of the Sift.

EDIT: look at the way he throws his body into it. That's crazy. He was really, really intent on killing that guy.

I don't think this is snuff. It was a very powerful political incident in Japan.

Back to sincere discussion, I can see this viewpoint as well. It's always seemed like historical events (Hindenburg, fires, earthquakes, etc.) were held differently in the Sift's estimation... Maybe some clarification on that front would be helpful moving forward. Then, again, this is why I stick to Comedysift.

Well, with the hindenberg, we didn't see literally people dying before our eyes. We knew they were, but there were no images of people burning and crashing to their deaths.

FAQ:
"Note: The presence of human fatality is acceptable and not considered "snuff" if presented as a limited portion of a lengthy educational, informative news report or documentary."

I'm reading this as a video having some sort of insight into an informative event. But do we really need to actually see the man murdered in order to be informed of the event? Can't text such as what is in the videos description, give us enough information?

I'm thinking of a scenario like this:

You say to me:
"Man A was murdered by Man B"

I say:
"That's not enough information, I need to actually see Man B murder Man A."

I'm not following this logic. And it's not as if this is a current event, nor do I really understand what the relevance in anyone's lives are for this to be considered "news". I mean, you can't spell news without new! (oh god that was lame)

Also, if we can just upload a "limited portion of a lengthy" piece of a news event, can someone sift a video collage of various people being murdered, all taken from documentaries, and set it to an uplifting soundtrack of something?

jimnms actually makes me change my mind. This is not framed to entertain as such, just presented without any opinion fluff. I would allow this, because something like the JFK assassination is here.

As long as it isn't framed as snuff (think a title like: asian dies, lol) then it would be clear snuff, but this is just coldly presented.

bleedmegoodsays...

jimnms actually does have a very valid point....obviously a double-standard exists....i find the Zapruder film to be far more disturbing than this....the Oswald/Ruby assassination is also on the sift...much like the pornography issue, snuff isn't always black and white and easily defined....given the greater historical context, I think that this video is sift-worthy....

peggedbeasays...

sift worthy, i think snuff implies that the graphic images of death are only for entertainment value. this is a historical, political event. before this video, i was unaware that this ever happened and that it was caught on film. i was just educated.

it's very much like the porn argument. if it was designed to be jerked off to, it's porn. if it was designed to educate or be laughed at it, it's probably not.

dbot2006says...

I sifted this because it is an important historical event that I was unaware of, however I think that the clip lacks the context necessary to make it an educational, informative news report or documentary. If I could go back in time after having read this discussion and decide whether to sift or not to sift I would choose NO SIFT.

edit: Please don't ban me

volumptuoussays...

I personally don't have a problem with snuff. I've seen all the Faces of Death series', used to regularly visit rotten.com, and for a while in my life I had a dark liking for watching video of deaths.

The only reason I wanted to discuss this at all was to follow sift rules and see what everyone else thinks.
