George Carlin - Dealing with Homelessness

Almost 20 years ago and what has changed?
notarobotjokingly says...

What are you talking about? Everyone in Canada knows that it has been seen as a complete success story throughout the States! Everyone knows it will be a success! There has never been a report anywhere in the States or in Canada to the Canada! Especially not in the evening news!

>> ^GenjiKilpatrick:

Right, cause that's worked sooo well here in the U.S.
Aboot time there were some Canadian ghettos/projects/hoods.
>> ^notarobot:
In Canada, The Harper Government has solved the problem of corporations and private interest being unable to profit from solving the problem of homelessness. Earlier this year they declared that they will devote billions into a new low-income housing project.

not "your" as in Alien_concept. colon space right parentheses.

Hahaha, no you sound like my best mate, who's occupying and protesting left and right and despairs at my apathy. But it's not real apathy, it's just being resigned. Anyway THANK YOU and good to see you again MrC!

Skeevesays...

My thoughts exactly.

I'm definitely not one of those powerful businessmen carving up the country, but I do love to golf. It's hardly a meaningless activity to me.

It's particularly ironic because at the beginning he attacks how warlike America is... maybe he should attack sports like football and hockey which are war analogues instead of a peaceful, relaxing sport like golf.>> ^PHJF:

Well that was fine until that bit about golf. I like golfing.

Corporate cunts don't spend time that should be spent in meetings or deserving the vast sums of money they get playing hockey and football though, I doubt

Skeevesays...

No, they don't play hockey or football. They own the teams and make billions of dollars a year because fat, stupid people would rather pay money to watch someone else do something athletic than do something themselves.

Those "corporate cunts" on the golf course make their money from these modern gladiatorial sports and the mindless consumers who obsess over them.>> ^alien_concept:

@Skeeve

Okay, but the point I was aiming for was that you didn't like him being disparaging about golf and golfers, because you like golf and golfing. But to make his point why would he kick off about football or hockey? Also, that assumption that people who enjoy sports are all fat and lazy and don't partake themselves is lame.

Skeevesays...

No, I don't like him being disparaging about golf and golfers because not all golf and golfers are how he describes them and his idea (tongue-in-cheek or not) regarding golf courses taking up too much space is ridiculous.

I made a generalization of other sports fans to compare with his generalization of golfers. Both are stupid generalizations, but IMO his is particularly bad for ignoring his own admonishments against our propensity for violence and the brainwashing of the public.

The argument can be made that the major league sports harm our society more in the long run. Carlin regularly talked about how those in power were keeping the lower classes ignorant and entertained and if he thought these sports weren't part of that then he was just as brainwashed as the rest.>> ^alien_concept:

Skeeve dude, I've always liked you and your commentary so please don't get me wrong here. But it really fucking aggravates me when generalisations get jumped on, like every comment anyone makes has to be specific. That's just pedantic as far as I can tell.

Mammaltronsays...

Sure, nationalise/steal those privately-owned golf courses and build ghettos on them, should work out fine.

Solutions to complex social problems which begin with some variant of "they should just..." should just be ignored.

Of course they should, If he were to go into fine and great detail about what they should do to fix XYZ issue, it wouldn't be funny anymore. Pretty sure Carlin doesn't believe what he's saying all of the time, a lot of it is definitely the rantings of an angry man

Ryjkyjsays...

Some additional ruminations on the subject of golf from master Carlin:

"And finally welcome to golf. For my full take on golf, I refer you elsewhere in the book, but let it just be said golf is a game that might possibly be fun, if it could be played alone. But it's the vacuous, striving, superficial, male-bonding joiners one has to associate with that makes it such a repulsive pastime. And it is decidedly not a sport. Period."

"O.J. Simpson has already received the worst punishment possible: for the rest of his life, he has to associate with golfers."

quantumushroomsays...

Yeah, Carlin was a genius, mainly cause he attacked the obvious. Don't know if he was ever happy. If not, he screwed himself. But he made others happy, so perhaps it didn't matter.

In 2001 Carlin said in an interview he made 2.5 million a year. So there's 6 years, or 15 million dollars we know about, not counting all the years before then. I want to know what this dude spent that money on (the houseless?) and where it went after his (re)absorption into the Big Electron.
