First teaser for "the Happening"

This is the first look at Shyamalan's new film. His last couple (Lady in the Water and the Village) were kind of iffy, but this looks like a nice return to form.

This looks like it might be some kind of "memetic attack", like someone has managed to wrap the idea of suicide into a contagious, irresistible package.

It looks like it could be really cool.

And I actually liked "The Village", though it wasn't as good as his earlier stuff. Never saw "Lady in the Water" though. Got too many bad word-of-mouth reviews for me to give it a shot.

The first thing that popped into my head about this was "The ScrewFly Solution".

A classic, fantastic SF short story by James TipTree Jr. In her story, some kind of pathogen infected the human race and made males unwillingly seek out and destroy all females. Towards the end, one of the few remaining males who quarantined himself in the deep woods- sees "angels" descending from the sky- and he figures out that the pathogen was released by ETs who wanted to depopulate the planet to make it easier to colonize.

I bet it's something like that ...

Also, I think that M Night has gotten a bit of a bum rap. I've enjoyed all of his movies, even the Lady in the Swimming Pool- or whatever it was called.

Kronos: Lady in the water was promoted wrong. It is like a quirky comedic indie film. Very funny (on purpose) with a few scares thrown in. Still has the great direction that draws you in. Still has the great emotional impact. It was just very different from what the commercials were trying to sell it as.

dag: The Screwfly Solution was made into a film for the Masters of Horror series. Not a great version but decent.

Suntzu: I think this film has nothing to do with destroying New York.

It's plant life, guys. I know people in the studio doing it. It has something to do with plant life taking over. Great twist. This guy's such a great film maker but he's painted himself into this corner of twist-expectation he can never regain. He needs to let someone else write his films. Lady in the Water was a cluster-fuck of nonsense that should have stayed in his head. And he stole The Village and got sued (I worked for the lit agency that repped the author he ripped off).

And I hear you, Suntzu, about it always being NYC, but the fact is, NYC is one of the only US Skylines that international audiences can readily recognize. And international ticket sales are now what make films successful. So New York it is.
