SFOGuyAt one point, the City of Detroit was too poor to buy them toilet paper.
I stopped by the station in this video and gave them a donation.
The documentary "Burn" covers the whole story in an incredibly gripping manner.

But, they have a PC with speakers right there, couldn't they use like a $10 fax / modem and have some loud sound play on incoming faxes? They need a visit from some volunteer geek wizard who's familiar with such arcane technology.

PaybackYa, people who run INTO burning buildings and save lives and property are idiots if they don't know how to program a computer, because -y'know like- everyone who has a computer knows how to program it.
Seriously though... there's some serious irony in the fire hazard wiring of their bell system.

FlowersInHisHairThey're idiots if they don't try to find a better solution than a soda can balanced on a printer, yes. They could find someone who knows how to set up an audible alarm when a fax comes in to a PC quite easily.
