America's Worst Environmental Disaster

A CNN report about a disaster in Tennessee that's almost a 100 times larger than the Exxon-Valdez spill and is severely affecting the health of the local populace.

OK, I have got to ask---why the F**K are those people still living around there? If your kids are getting headaches/nosebleeds/asthma, get off your lazy ass and MOVE! I don't care who is responsible. It is better to be living out of your car than to be living in a toxic waste dump.

It's like these people are waiting for a big government check and they pulled in the white version of Jesse Jackson to help.

^ It's so easy to say "Just pick up and move", ignoring the fact that as homeowners, a huge chunk of their material possessions is in fact, their home.

As a home built in the middle of an industrial-spill zone, it's now below worthless. They can't sell it, and thus, can't buy a new one. I doubt they could even afford a trailer if they tried.

What's incredible to me is the EPA's response. Evidently coal ash is good for you, or they would have placed it in the "might be hazardous, better safe than sorry" category and force higher standards towards it until proven safe.

Demon, as I said, living in a car is preferable to living in a toxic waste dump. At this point, it's really a life or death decision; it should be a no-brainer to dump everything and move.

No one's going to pay attention to this because there's no images of baby seals coated in this stuff like the Exxon Valdez.

That's the real course of action for the residents. Don't move. Go get some baby seals, chuck 'em in, and break out the polaroid.

Shame.

Yeah I live in TN and there are people in my area that don't even know about this! Then again there are people in this area that have barely been out of the county.

Coal is disgusting and technologically obsolete.

It was technologically obsolete a long time ago, but the environazis irrationally fearmongered nuclear power for decades, a highly efficient and emission-free source of power generation that remains at about 20% here while places like France are at 80%.

TVA is a creature borne of government, by the way. It was a part of FDR's new deal and a total failure. You reap what you sow.

It's hardly the worst environmental disaster. It may have released more material, but it's only affected 1.2 sq km.

Exxon Valdez spill affected 28,000 sq km of ocean and 2000 km of coastline. The total environmental impact is not even comparable to a few peoples homes and some fish.

Lemmie know how much you dislike it when the demand starts kicking in and we start going back to coal>oil conversion technologies.

I think we'd all prefer a Manhattan Project to set up next generation nuclear, solar, and batteries.

Not to say this isn't terrible, but it just goes to show that it's all about how you spin it.

Typical American mentality. Because all you OWN is your house, you should stay, because then you wouldn't OWN anything. Fuck life, and the fact that you're drinking sludge, you wouldn't want to be HOMELESS, because that would make you LESS THAN HUMAN.

/edit I'm a homeowner. I would be gone, in a second, if this piece of wood, plastic, and concrete, had any chance of killing me, or a family of my own blood. I would be living out of a car in seconds, because "daddy doesn't want you to die from cancer"

Too bad you've let nimbyists, special interest groups, and envirowackos tell you that recycling nuclear fuel is bad, and MOX is the DEVIL! Well that's alright, we'll take your plutonium up here in Canada, and Japan will take it too, and so will the rest of the world and use it as fuel. We aren't so picky. And you seem to hate the idea of pebble bed reactors, and you absolutely refuse to fund the next generation fission and fusion reactors.

Solar and batteries are a moot method of generation and storage. A better form of passive energy transfer, or capacitance storage medium will be the better option. On top of that, the best way to get "free" energy will be the beam it back to earth method via satellite.

Fuckin' Obama.

Oh shit, I was channeling QM again. Sorry.

"Fuckin' Obama", who still cannot or will not prove he is a natural born US citizen, is the greatest disaster to liberty in America's history (if you don't count Congress).

When are the Obamedia shills going to blame Bush for this?
