Bose-Einstein Condensates: The Fifth State of Matter

Clayton says...

A truely fascinating field of study, not only in terms of the peculiar properties of BEC's, most of which this video doen't get into, but the ingenious methods used to remove energy from these groups of atoms. I initially began researching this topic by way of the investigating questions that had been a thorn in my mind for far too long:

How the fuck does a laser cool something? Don't lasers heat, melt, burn, evaporate, etc?
The answers to this questions led me to BEC's, Superfluidity, Supersolids, Feshbach resonance, ...

It was a satisfying foray into physics.

Free Your Mind - Vietnamese Dog Meat Restaurant

I spent a year in S. Korea and had asked my then S. Korean girlfiend to take me to a restaurant that served gaegogi because I wanted too try it. Just out of curiousity, novelty. Sadly, we never got around to it. She did warn me however that, contrary to the following wiki, the dish was rather pricey ~ $30-$40, maybe it was just where she had been planning to take me. While she had a little dog as a pet, most seemed to view dogs in much the same way as we view pigs. No "special species" status, no preferential treatment. I can respect that.

Some interesting details regarding gaegogi can be found here:

My gun's bigger than your gun

Clayton says...

"so.... the guy... escaped?"

Given that the roles had reversed, the would be robber was no longer life threatening. The use of deadly force in trying to apprehend the robber would likely have landed the clerk in prison. He was right in not shooting him. Look at the clerk, physically detaining the much larger robber would likely have been difficult. Especially with one hand, unless the clerk were to drop the gun...not a good idea.

EMPIRE;

You may be confusing me for someone who disagree with the "spewing forth nonsense" part. You can be pissed off, you have the right. What you don't have is the right forcefully shut her up. The fact that it is a public school is irrelevant, SHE'S NOT IN THE ADMINISTRATION. It's completely different that say, a coach leading prayer. The coach would be a paid public servant, she is not! If kids run though the playground chanting to Allah or whomever, while I would be dismayed, I would never seek to criminalise it. If she was asked to speak, and they didn't speciffically tell her what to speak about the decision is her's. That's freedom, like it or not. Had you been there you might have gotten pissed and walked out, I probably would have started laughing...it's all good. Just don't be to quick to cross that line regarding freedom of speech, you may find yourself on the other side of that line someday

Calloway V Gate - Magnet Motor Prototype

Clayton says...

Yes, it could be done by a use of a simple cam and spring, but the point is that even with an extremely effiecient cam and roller setup you'll never get, or exceed, the energy required to operate it out of the system. It would require equal, 100% effieciency, or greater for operation. Remember that moving the single magnet back and forth is, at least in one direction, met with resistance. That restistence is surely greater that the energy output of the shaft of the wheel.

A few years ago I researched some of the most effiecient energy storage systems on the market, they use a high speed composite fly wheel and an electric motor/generator. They were contained in a vacuum, to eliminate air turbulence, and they use active magnetic bearing to levitate nearly reducing friction. Nearly, because even when minimized there are still sources of loss inherent in magnets, like magnetic hysteresis and eddy currents. I was pretty impressed, Active Power for example claims 98% energy efficiency. 100% or more is simply not possible.

Self-Induced Religious Fit

Being an atheist I sympathize, but censorship isn't the answer. I'm not threatened by this type of theatrics, maybe a little creeped out but that's okay. If anything I suspect that it does more harm to religion than good.

If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all.

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

What is freedom of expression? Without the freedom to offend, it ceases to exist.

Free speech is intended to protect the controversial and even outrageous word; and not just comforting platitudes too mundane to need protection.

Of course I'd be free to fall over laughing aswell

gluonium (Member Profile)

Hey gluonium, the Z machine is getting new electrical circuits that will do away with the cool light show depicted in your avatar, kinda sad in a way, but good in so far as yeilded efficiency:
http://www.physorg.com/news96730015.html

If you ever find a video of a test firing of the Z machine, prior to the upgrade, I would be eternally grateful, I've looked to no avail.

upvote for interesting design, probably not terribly efficient though.

I do have to agree with gluonium here though, lose the "free energy?" tag. He is, by hand forcing the magnet into what effectively amounts to a wedge thereby driving the wheel. The flux field of the held magnet has fixed proportions that can only be exploited to a fixed degree. Without physically moving the magnet or electrically altering the field he will not be able to overcome the "gate" dilema. It's cetainly not free energy.

As hysterical as this and the rowing barge are I have to admire the ingenuity and sheer determination. The guy presumably had transmission problems and was determined to get where he needed to be. Now that's a "can do", "make it happen" attitude.

LOL, shit happens, shit can be funny like that sometimes.

Sadly, if that had happened here in California the mother would have sued the dancer & the city, and the state would have banned dancing in public.

Poo Facts

Clayton says...

An interesting fact I picked up the other day, just in case you wondered why your shit is typically brown:

The brown colour of feces is due to the action of bacteria on bilirubin, which is the end product of the breakdown of hemoglobin (red blood cells)

Bilirubin is a useless and toxic breakdown product of hemoglobin, which also means that it is generated in large quantities. In the time it takes you to read this sentence aloud, roughly 20 million of your red blood cells have died and roughly 5 quintillion (5 x 1015) molecules of hemoglobin are in need of disposal.

In the liver cells (hepatocytes) the bound bilirubin reacts with glucuronic acid to form conjugated bilirubin. Most of the conjugated bilirubin is secreted into the small intestine with the bile. In the large bowel, bacteria convert bilirubin into the yellow-brown pigment (urobilinogen) that gives feces its characteristic color. Some of this pigment re-enters the blood from the colon and is removed by the kidney into the urine (characteristic color).

I'd been trying to figure this out, and did, thought I'd share (Sift Talk Post)
