kick ass-introduction to hit girl

this movie got so much flack for having a 12 yr old vigilante but i say any girl who starts out with "ok you cunts, what are you gonna do now"? is an automatic win.

This was a great flick, and a good bit deeper than most critics gave it credit for. The movie earned it's right to have a murderous 12 year old by showing the heroes to be just as sadistic as the villains. I also think the film was making a statement about Americans, how we love violence, revenge and war, and how we rationalize our violence as acts of virtue. There are patriotic musical themes sprinkled throughout the flick that hint at this. If you breakdown the superhero, they are very authoritarian figures. I think this movie is a different take on some of Alan Moore's themes in Watchmen. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious.

Hit Girl was badass, and her action scenes were so well done. They'd better film a sequel before she grows up.

I get the criticism of Roger Ebert and others; I might even agree with them if the movie had been done differently. But it worked because the violence was cartoonish, while the relationship between the hit girl and her father seemed sincere. None of the butchery had an emotional impact, but the humor and sentiment did. The movie was a wonderful accomplishment in selective humanization.

Good points - and I agree completely. I enjoyed this movie - but in a cringing, guilty way. Something to do with being a parent with kids close to this age.

Much of the violence was cartoonish, like Hit Girl running down a hallway, killing 20 guys in a matter of seconds, but some of the violence seemed intent on being disturbing, like when Big Daddy and Hit Girl smash a guy in a car crusher and laugh about it, or when hit girl kills the woman in the red dress. I think these scenes were deliberately meant to mirror the scenes in which the villains torture people.

I think 'selective humanization' is more of a condition of our culture than anything else, and Matthew Vaughn is playing with this concept, pushing our buttons. I've got his commentary on a blu-ray, I should probably check it out for more insight.

The scene with the car crusher was probably the only scene I would have cut. I think it felt too "real" and just made me uncomfortable - and I have pretty thick skin.
