feminism

One woman's view of "feminism". So what do you think about "feminism"?

Comments like.........
"pfft she was totally asking for it with that tight shirt!"
are what she is talking about. She isn't generalising about all men. Just people who rationalise rape in that way

rembarsays...

Yikes, I just really didn't jive with her flow, and her intonation was really annoying.

As for her message...as LadyBug pointed out to me on another poem I sifted once, it sounds so sincere, but who is she talking to? If NickyP is right, and she's only talking to men who try to explain away rape, then she's just talking big but it doesn't matter. If she's generalizing for all men....then that's just dumb.

Either way....:(

And seriously if you think there aren't any bitches and hoes (who can be male or female) in this world, you ain't lived long enough.

Sounds like shes attacking rap artists lol

redthingsays...

I'm all for equality and I loathe separatism, this isn't the 1970's and the premise that all men are rapists is as ridiculous now as it was then. There are nice people and there are not so nice people - gender isn't a defining factor.

I think she is also pointing out that rape is about control and not passion and that it is a product of a society that teaches men that they have to control, supress, deride, and demean feminine traits in order to feel masculine. Our society teaches men that to be feminine is almost the worst thing that they can be. "Bitch" and "whore" don't have male equivalents. I dare you to even come close to finding male equivalents that carry anything like that kind of stigma.

No wonder rape is common.

"ever notice feminists are always people you wouldnt wanna f anyway?" - george carlin.

God I fucking hate it when people misquote Carlin.

o_O That comment was 4 years ago. Anyhow I looked this up, and it's "Have you noticed that most of the women who are against abortion are women you wouldn't want to fuck in the first place, man" So yes, you are arguably right. This may have been was mixed up with "feminists want to control your language".

On the other hand, this was from his shows like in 1997 or so. Memory isn't infallible.

Wow, I didn't even realize you weren't a long-gone lurker or something. Sorry about that, I get confused with the sheer number of people that comment here.

Now, I apologize for beating a dead horse, but the quote is, "Why is it that most PEOPLE who are against abortion are people you wouldn't wanna fuck in the first place?" It's from "Back in Town" (1997) and even though memory might be fallible, Videosift isn't:

I just wanted to point it out because George Carlin was absolutely a feminist, even though I'm sure he would hate the label. That said, I can't stand this video.

Just gotta say that to those that can't see her point and wonder who she's talking to, she seems to mostly be talking to those who stand by, not so much those that rape (because how many of them would be watching slam poetry?), but for those that just let slide all the comments, all the macho shit, all the objectification of women. Letting other men think that it's fine to be that way is almost as bad as being that way yourself.

bareboards2says...

I agree, except for the last sentence. It isn't almost as bad as being that way yourself. No way do I agree with that.

What is it that you hate about it, @Ryjkyj ? I love that you see so clearly how non-gendered the original Carlin quote is -- I think you "get it" -- so I wonder what it is about this that bugs you?

Yeah, I kinda thought it was a little bit of an overstatement when I wrote it. It's not as bad as actively doing it to be absolutely sure.

But not speaking out against derogatory remarks, actions and the like does nothing to help the situation and allows it to perpetrate.

Ryjkyjsays...

OK, I know it's picky but here goes: I don't like the mannerisms affected by people in these slam poetry exhibitions. I don't really have a problem with what she's saying, I think, because when I see people take on those mannerisms, all I hear is, "blah, blah, blah". I realize she's trying to speak from the heart about an issue that's really important but I just can't get past the whole hand-gesturing-Ebonics thing. About the best way I can put how it makes me feel is with another quote from professor Carlin:

"Elvis was a bogus white guy with sex appeal and good looks who ripped off a lot of great black music, watered it down, and made it safe for lame whites who couldn’t handle the experience of raw, emotional black music."

That's pretty much exactly what I think of when I see hipsters attempting slam poetry.

This video has been up for four years and no one was going to say anything about the description? One womens? This is wrong in so many ways. First of all, women is plural, so you can't have ONE women. Second of all, there should be an apostrophe before the "s" to make it possessive, especially since women is already plural, which is the reason "womens" isn't even a word in the English language.
/grammarNazi

Oh, and uh, yeah... rape is bad, Carlin is awesome.

[edit] Fixed now. Score another one for grammar nazis. No hard feelings. =)
