Zero Punctuation - The E3 Trailer Park

"Celestial Lance". That is all.

The most interesting games for me at E3 were Mirror's Edge, LittleBigPlanet, and M.A.G, just for the scale of it all.

Wii Music looks utterly terrible, like Guitar Hero with only a strum bar, which doesn't actually do anything.

It's so true. Every game coming out is now a sequel. This is the PC line up for 2008.

Fallout 3
Red Alert 3
Mafia 2
Gears of War 2
Starcraft 2
Stalker 2
Mercenaries 2
GTA 4 (PC)
Warhammer Dan of War 2
Diablo 3
Brothers in Arms 2
Far Cry 2
FEAR 2 (Aka Project Origin)
Sacred 2
Jagged Alliance 3
MotoGP 08
Saints Row 2
Street Fighter IV
Postal 3

I don't think Spore counts as its really on the thin line. It could be just a Sims with biology thrown in. Niether does Left 4 Dead, its just a very popular HL Coop mod set in Zombieville.

so with the big hollywood budgets that games have now, comes the hollywood executive angst of producing something new..?

How much do you really want a new IP? Two words that should remove all obscene thoughts of such nature: Assassin's Creed!

If you still want a new brand after that, good luck on ya son, but I'll settle with Splinter Cell 16 before I touch that crap again.

Ugh, stop typing. Please. The idea that if one original title fails, it means original ideas should be avoided, is f'ing retarded.

Aemaethsays...

Part of the reason we don't see anything original in games is the reason we don't see anything original in movies: the big studios put a lot of money into the biggest productions now, which means they lose a lot of money if the idea is bad. Why do something daring when you can make the same old material over again and make about as much money without any risk? The sweeping new ideas are left to new studios who don't get as much exposure to main stream and hence have less chance of making the idea really work.

mizilasays...

"New IP" is one of the worst phrases I have ever heard. When I was a kid we said "new game".

Actually I think it was quite right to say "New IP," as they were talking about a game based on new ideas, as opposed to a game that is a sequel to other games. IP of course stands for Intellectual Property, usually referring to a games entire canon. So Assasin's Creed would be a "new IP," while Splinter Cell 16 would not be, though clearly both would be considered "new games."

Then again, I'm sure I said "new game" as a kid too.
