Zero Punctuation: Left 4 Dead 2 & New Super Mario Bros Wii

Yahtzee takes on Left 4 Dead 2 & New Super Marior Bros Wii.

Surprise, surprise, he hates the Wii game!

Well at least he got it right about Left 4 Dead 2, or at least how I view it.

Seriously, where is Half-Life 2 Ep 3? It's not like Left 4 Dead 1 was getting old and stale, and of course there is that much cheaper (and more fun) bit of Team Fortress 2.

I know Valve wont hear me over the sound of the cash register, however.

Exactly. The most recent news I heard about episode 3 was in an interview stating the game's gonna be very ambitious. I'm starting to suspect it's going to end up as a full blown game (as opposed to episode'ish).

It's also possible they where a little burned out on chugging forward on the Half-Life side and took a sorta break. I've heard some very interesting stories on how they foster creativity within valve. Whatever the case, when it hits I'm all over it.

Good review this week too.

I'm fairly confident Half-Life 2: Episode Three will actually be released as Half-Life 3. It's been over 2 years since Episode Two was released, and we haven't heard a single detail or seen a single screenshot from the expected Episode Three. I think they were finding that the episodes were taking longer than they intended, and decided if it was going to take as long as it was, they may as well release another whole game.

His right that SMBWii is just a juiced up SMB3 and some new innovations would of been nice but it's still some of the best fun I've had in a game this year. While I'd much rather Nintendo bring out more new brands like Pikmin, I'd still much much rather them bring out stuff like SMBWii than any more Wii <activity> games.

Just avoid the propeller hat and you'll find a much deeper game, I'm fairly certain that item exists purely to make the game easier for casual players, as most challenges that would of required careful timing and jumping skills, turn in to a single shake of the wiimote.

Left 4 Dead 2 is more of a sequel than Modern Warfare 2 is--and I could probably name any number of other sequels, as well.

Is there a similar feel? Sure. That's why it's Left 4 Dead 2, rather than a completely different game. But there are enough changes--including more campaigns than the original at release--that it more than qualifies as a complete game unto itself. If you don't like sequels, that's fine, and perhaps Yahtzee doesn't. But it's a lot more than an expansion pack.

I don't really have any facts on this, but I wouldn't be surprised if they released it early just because they were excited about it.

I haven't played the first one, but the gore effects are so good that I am ecstatic. I'm a major fan of the Soldier of Fortune franchise and consider myself to be a critic in my own right.

L4D2 meets and/or surpasses SOF2's gore in multiple respects. Any fan of SOF should play L4D2; it's obvious that they were using it as an example.

This may be a minor point, but does anyone remember how nice the real-time character renders were in Resident Evil (remake) on the Gamecube?

I think they've added a similar touch to the playable characters in general texture quality (performance would degrade too much if this detail was present on 200 zombies though).

You won't be disappointed.

You know why L4D 2 includes more campaigns than the original at release? Because Valve released L4D1 with pathetically little content. Those 4 campaigns took you ~4-6 hours to get through the first time, depending on the difficulty.

You know why people are upset? Because they bought L4D1 with the idea that Valve was going to support it with frequent releases like TF2. Instead, they just bundle up all the content that could have and should have been released for L4D, added some extra gimmicks, and called it L4D2, not even a year after the first game was finished. So yeah, you can say that L4D2 is very "sequel" like because of the extra content, but that's because it cannibalized content meant for the original. And no, there's no excuse for shoveling out a sequel once a year like EA does with its sports franchises. That's just greed at the expense of your fans, and not something that I'd expect Valve to do.
