Zero Punctuation: Borderlands 2

This week, Zero Punctuation reviews Borderlands 2.
Jinxsays...

He's right on exactly everything...but I still kind of like the game. It expanded on the only thing people gave a fuck about in the original - guns. Its not a complex game and its pretty shallow but I still find it enjoyable if I don't think too hard...much like watching a crappy action movie with friends.

Ha he's on form with this one for sure. Despite me not liking the graphical style at all it does just strike me as boring. And all that nonsense about zillions of guns? Really? It's just a huge grind. I'd rather have a focused corridor-shooter with finely honed mechanics and a great story. Yes I'm awaiting the next Bioshock game.

Touche.. Stopped playing the first one after the zillionth time i had to return to base and the next mission was literally just meters from where the previous one was. Boring as hell.

Not thinking too hard is key for this one, like not thinking about how futile it must be to kill someone and then have them just re-spawn again. Hyperion even runs the network that allows this to happen, and Jack never once seems to consider wandering into the server room and just quietly erasing your latest backup so that the next time you die it's permanent.

You do know that, while you can track only one at a time, it doesn't mean you can't do every quest on your list before you turn them it. It takes two seconds to select another active quest and go.

I didnt think of that...probably because I wasn't thinking. But hey, there is a quest at one point where Jack actually asks you to kill yourself. Like you throw yourself off a cliff, respawn and collect the reward from Jack. Lets just assume that all Hyperion cares about is profits. Killing me permanently would close off a potential revenue stream from that guy that hoovers cash out of toilets.

Finally someone states it outright, I usually think yahtzee exaggerates his criticisms for effect, but he's spot on here: Borderlands was the most boring game ever. I cant for the life of me understand why anyone would like it even a little. Bad acting, terrible "humor", and every billionth gun more boring and generic than the previous billion boring generic guns. And that's not even mentioning the horrible "collecting garbage" system to build stuff. I'd really rather take a real-life job as a garbage collector. At least then it wouldn't be virtual garbage.

For obvious reasons, I haven't picked up BL2, and don't intend to.

NinjaInHeatsays...

I like Yahtzee but honestly it's becoming very tiring having to accept that he's only willing to review games on his "terms".

He's made it repeatedly clear that he never plays online, not co-op and not competitive. Which means he played this game alone, which is very much a possibility but obviously not a proper way to review a game specifically designed for co-op.
He refuses to acknowledge any amount of effort put into the development of types of features he doesn't enjoy (but that a ton of other players do), and instead of at least giving credit where it's due he ignores those aspects completely.

Borderlands has always been about loot, Borderlands 2 does this EXTREMELY well but he couldn't give a rat's ass.
It's like letting someone review DOTA and hearing him complain about the lack of a proper plot and that just generally he hates RTS games (or however the hell you'd define DOTA).

There's more to reviewing games than just saying what you like and what you don't, especially when your taste is super-specific.

I somewhat agree with this review. It certainly is a shallow game, with some odd mechanics and a really bad quest system. That said, the variety of guns is huge so it's real fun when you find something new. The combat is invigorating and can be quite challenging (especially in co-op). But really this game isn't about story, or snappy mechanics, or innovative design. It's about finding ever-bigger guns and blowing the heads off random bandit bad guys.

I think one of the bad things is your fun is directly related to your luck in finding good weapons. I'm sure many folks have had bad luck and spent a few hours with a new character and gotten shit guns throughout. For me it was the Siren who (early on) has about the most useless special power of all four classes. I really, really liked the Siren from the first game so I stick with the class but it took about 10 hours or so before Siren began to get fun as I unlocked better talents and 'FINALLY' found a few decent guns.

@Xaielao I felt exactly as you do, until I hit about level 16 and found my first farmable chest (red one near the bridge in Highlands.) I don't mind farming the random-number-generator, actually I kind of enjoy it to see what kind of wacky creations I get. I spent about 30 minutes hitting that chest on my Zero until I was satisfied with my selection of level 16 greens and blues. From that point on, I never felt severely underpowered.
