I love how the Cleric argues that other places permit marriage at 12 or 14 but he fails to see the distinction between contractual marriage and a marriage between two mutually consenting individuals. His persistence to just throw some facts out the door and maintain his biased opinion makes me think he was a Republican in a past life.

Yes, "two mutually consenting individuals" instead of a child who is essentially being sold off to some old guy.

I was waiting for someone to make this point but unfortunately it didn't happen. He says that a child may be contractually married from their first breaths; he may have been asked if this is right when the child has no say in the matter.

Perhaps it just isn't in this edit.

Rock on! I was hoping this was her. Glad to see that she appears to have made a clean getaway and is living happily in freedom.

Not only that but the extreme ages he's quoting are for the most part bullshit. Some jurisdictions allow lower marriage ages but only in special cases such as pregnancy and usually with some form of judicial consent required.

Forced marriage and forbidden divorce have got to be the most prominent form of slavery that still exists in the world. It is as loathsome and shameful as any other kind of slavery. And nations with any respect for human rights shouldn't be tolerant of it just because it's tied up with religious teachings.

And it's not just Muslim nations that are the problem. For example, divorce is illegal in the Philippines, because they are taking their lead from Vatican City, where it's also illegal. That amount of suffering this causes is just staggering.
