Worst Self Defense Technique: Jellyfish

I'm sorry, but slapping someone with your open hand doesn't seem as effective as a punch.

they aren't saying to pussy-slap someone's face.
Your fist is very delicate if you don't know how to wield it.
An open palm can do enough damage without putting you at risk of breaking something and disabling yourself. Imagine breaking your right hand on a skull, concrete, etc., then trying to start your car with a lunatic coming at you with a knife.

ummm so some drunk takes a massive hay-maker swing at your head (cos it wont work on a straight punch)... then you slap them

They squeal and run away shouting oooOOOO it stings! it STINGS!!!

If you slap me and give me little blood blisters, i'm going to turn your face into a bloody pulp - and we'll see who's "comes up worse later that night"

This isn't your girlfriend's slap. You'd be surprised how effective a strike like this is. But it's not a finishing move. You'd buy some time by slapping them a bunch of times (imagine getting one of those right on the ear). From there, either run away or punch them.

Some of my favorite techniques are open handed. There are some subtleties to the motions that turn a crap slap into an effective strike.

Tiger Claw, its not a joke. Done to eye sockets. Strong palm strikes to the lower ribs, and upper ribs cause catastrophic damage, because the force spread out over the target area.

In my experience a punch does stinging (sensation) damage, where as a palm strike (With the base of the palm) does dull (sensation) damage.

Its a matter of preference.

This is not about making a target sting, its about upsetting their nervous system for just an instant so that you proceed to destroy them.

NordlichReiter is very bellicose

But yes, there is an instictive reaction to sharp pain. Think if when you touch a hotplate unexpectantly, you immediately withdraw your hand without thinking.

Painful attacks like this can serve to give your attacker pause for just a moment. You could then follow up with some other easy attacks like an elbow or hammer fist, which don't require knuckles.

residuesays...

everybody that's pissing that this wouldn't hurt needs to be on the receiving end of it before they say it's ineffective. Try a full open palm slap on the side of the head and tell me you aren't dazed for long enough to get your ass handed to you in the aftermath.

It just sounds retarded when he says "you're here, jellyfish, jellyfish"

That being said, I'd be surprised if you could get the first jellyfish in on the block... If the haymaker was at full speed you'd never be able to "jellyfish" it unless you knew 100% that it was coming and they gave you time to prepare... Even if you knew, I don't see that being particularly effective in the circumstance. The head one is alright though

KnivesOutsays...

If you push your palm into someones mouth and into their nose like that, in a quick jabbing motion, you have a good chance of killing them, at least that's what I've been led to believe.

The first jellyfish might be the only one you need.

I've been a Shaolin monk for the last two-thousand years. I've fought a long succession of tigers, monkey kings and even dragons to name but a few of my worthy opponents and I just have to say: this definitely would not work in a street fight.

NOTHING works in a street fight. Thats what makes em street fights.

And the whole slapping thing, a full on slap hurts like eight bitches on a bitch boat. During the RTL portion of SERE school we were slapped around a good bit. If you dont think a hard slap from a grown man hurts then talk to some of the officers (who got it the worst) after coming back from SERE, their faces beat to hamburger

chilaxesays...

If an opponent is using their fists, doing clinch fighting, or pursuing a take down, inflicting pain through slaps won't be enough. Even if they break their fist in a punch, you might end up knocked out.

Yeah, you're the exact type of person I was parodying with that comment.
