World's largest container ship Mearsk Triple E in Rotterdam

The world's largest container ship, the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, docked in Rotterdam on Friday. It's the first time that this ship has visited the port, and it attracted thousands of spectators. In total this Friday there are three giant ships in the harbour, the largest container ship in the world, the largest tanker in the world, and the largest ore ship in the world.

The container ship Mc-Kinney Møller of the Maersk shipping company is 399 metres long, and 59 metres wide. It has a capacity of 18,000 TEU, shipping containers of about 6 metres long by 2.5 metres wide and 2.5 metres high.

The ship is named after the Danish sheep shipping magnate Arnold Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller. In 2000 he was the richest man in Denmark. He died last year at the age of 98.

The oil tanker Ti Europe is already in port and with a length of 380 metres and width of 69 metres is still the largest oil tanker.

The iron ore ship Vale Rio is also expected to dock in Rotterdam Friday, that ship is 362 metres long and 65 metres wide.

The port authority (Havenbedrijf) speaks of the week of giants.

The strangest thing about these enormous ships is the speed they move at. This ship travels at 23knots (just over 26mph, or just over 42kph). That doesn't sound fast if you're not a sailor or don't spend a lot of time on the water around these things, but for a boat, it's quick. We're used to the way things work on the roads, which is the bigger the truck, the slower it goes but on the water, it's pretty much the opposite. If you're sailing and you see a sailing boat on the horizon you've got a while to think about what to do to avoid it if necessary. With a ship like this it's not many minutes at all.

Incredible engineering.

wtf kind of engines do those monsters have anyway?

I'm a bit curious how long it takes to get up to speed, too. Bet it's quite a few minutes.
