from the first frame, you can tell he's too close, and that in going to parade rest, he puts his left leg right in the path.
he realizes it, just as it's going off, and instead of moving only to his right, he takes an awkward turn-step forward-ish as well. and he limps, for a moment, and does his best to shake it off at once.

that he was facing the correct direction at that moment, allowing his knee to bend with it, is the only reason that didn't get really ugly, really fast.
