Unattended Home Birth - The Final Glorious Moments

Pretty intense moment. The dudes question at the end floors me.

WTF? Why is this on first page? This is not "beautiful". Child birth is ugly and disgusting and I couldn't give two shits that's it's "natural". Pregnant women are gross and child birth is gross. If I would be a woman (thank God I am not) I would never ruin my body like that. Oh sure, go ahead and down vote me and try to pretend like this isn't what deep in side every one of you is thinking.

Ugh.

"...try to pretend like this isn't what deep in side every one of you is thinking."

I don't need to pretend.. I wasn't thinking that at all. Maybe your attitude will change when you have your own child.

I think most women see child birth as a culmination of sorts, rather than a ruination.

Yeah, I think when you get older, you'll see things differently. Probably when you were younger, you thought kissing and sex were gross and disgusting, as well.

> Pregnant women are gross

I'm not with ya on that one. Women look gorgeous pregnant. Maybe its ingrained evolutionary results speaking from my reptilian brain. What could be more feminine than a big pregnant belly.

You feel good when kissing and sexing. You don't feel good when giving birth. It's painful as hell and women really get their health fucked up while bearing the child.

They do not look sexy at all. If women would look gorgeous while pregnant you would see pregnant women in the magazines and movies all the time. Apparently they are not that gorgeous after all. What's even worse is that their navel pushes out and looks uber gross.

"Please, lie down on the couch. Now then, tell me about your mother..."

What this has to do with mother?

Wish I could have done this with my kids..."if I knew then what I know now"...I would have made more of my birthing experience than a hurry-to-the-hospital kinda thing...but I was so young...anyway, I find this video beautiful, thanks.

longdesays...

Birthing can be risky for some women. But I don't think it is unhealthy for the woman, especially today, when there are so many safeguards against infection. Ultimately though, giving birth is as natural as breathing.

My wife had all of our children naturally with no pain relief and no intervention, and the last one we had at home in water like this.

BUT.

Doing it at home with no midwives is just stupid as far as I'm concerned. What if something went wrong? Could they handle resuscitating? What if she had a large bleed out? Would they really know if the baby was in trouble? Really, what is gained by doing it on your own without a knowledgeable midwife (or two as we have to have here... well, did... they're kinda doing their best to make it effectively illegal in Australia to have a homebirth )?

Why do they feel it's a good idea to put themselves and the baby at risk? What? Just so they can boast that they did it all themselves?

I hate the hospital system and f*cking OBGYNs who prowl halls asking if anyone wants a spinal block (I kid you not, at our first birth, that's what was happening). I hate that they manufacture reasons to interfere and stop a woman being able to give birth as she was supposed to.

BUT

You should have people who know what to do when things go wrong, who know the signs that things are going wrong, who can tell you what's normal and what isn't. Doing it with just you and your husband there is just plain out stupid, selfish and dangerous. And doing shit like this just makes it harder for other parents like myself who are fighting the battle to keep the ability to birth at home an actual option at all.

Oh, and fjules, you're a fuckwit, plain and simple.

spoco2says...

The end question, btw, wasn't quite as weird as you might think.

If you have a water birth, and the baby doesn't breach the top of the water, they will continue to get oxygen via the umbilical cord. It's only once air touches the baby's skin that it switches to the mode of getting oxygen through breathing. It's a pretty amazing thing really. So, he just didn't fully understand what triggered the air breathing and probably thought it was to do with the umbilical cord being cut.

Hah! these people werent adequately prepared for anything but success.
My wife (midwife) says bleeding is what kills women. I doubt seriously they were prepared for any such thing.

Exactly, and it's things like this that those wanting to further the hospital system will point to and say 'Look, they're all reckless risk takers'. It aggravates me (and my wife who is studying as a midwife).

Reading this makes me so happy, Deathcow! Love to you and your family.

It was great to talk to you about homebirth on the weekend, Spoco! You and Deathcow have a lot in common, you know. I think you should come to Alaska with us next time and meet with the Deathcow family.
