Two WORST Martial Arts Techniques Ever!

Stephan Kesting from http://www.grapplearts.tv teaches the two worst techniques he's ever seen in his 30 years of martial arts training

The blocks from the first technique look like they're from karate. I remember learning them and thinking "this has got to be the most useless BS ever". I quit karate shortly after and have never looked back since.

Throbbinsays...

That second one looks promising. I'm not trained in the Martial Arts (a blue belt in Karate doesn't count), but off the top of my head I would think that's the BEST way to handle a rifle-bearing sentry.

Nithernsays...

Where does the techinques comes from? Hollywood. That's right, check any bad ninja movie from the 80's, and one or both of those 'techniques' will be in the film.

The first one looks like it would be from Karate, except, anyone who teachs it, would advise you evading the bat when the guy swings and THEN, attacking while the guy is off-balanced from the attack. Moving in close, before the bat starts to swing is handled in aikido (and other martial arts).

more likely to break your forearm than break the bat

Then, with your shattered forearm and concussion, make a stunned move to break something with your other arm, waving it ineffectually through the air. Use the momentum the bat gave you to crumple to the ground in a haze, and CONTINUING YOUR MOMENTUM roll once to a stop face-up on the pavement.

residuesays...

I'll bet these are part of some kata... Katas are filled with silly moves for silly situations. We had one in chung do kwan where you block a knife stike with the bottom of your foot by swinging it inward as it comes toward the front of your stomach. Once the knife strike was blocked, you stomp on their foot, then hit the far side of their neck with the thumb side of your hand, palm up... Oh if I had a nickel for every time I've used that one...

I don't know. I'm a Sandan in Aikido and my training tells me that when someone comes swinging a bat the best technique is to RUN. Some people would argue that Aikido doesn't work but I'd put my 'Baseball Bat Evasion' technique up against anyone else's, any day of the week.

But yeah, Hollywood. It's well known where I train that every time a Hollywood martial arts blockbuster comes out our enrollment's going to go through the roof.

that block is karate's answer to pretty much every single attack thrown at you.

Yea, karate is silly, such a block is only good for strikes that comes straight towards you, a baseball bat that comes in from the side is a whole other thing, since i have a blue belt in judo i would probably go in close and throw him to the ground by using his swinging motion against him.
Or block block it by basically grabbing his hands and then try to take his bat so i can do a bit of swinging hoping he learned the bad technique.

And the gun thing, if they get that close the best way is to get closer while pushing the gun away, preferably before the gun is pointing at you (which is really the best trick in martial arts, doing stuff to them before they do stuff to you).

Learning a Martial art is extremely useful when you are attacked by someone who has told you how they plan to strike you and then move very slowly and deliberaly so you can remember and action your defense.

Yea, karate is silly

Tell that to Lyoto Machida

Yeah except Machida doesn't use any of that karate bullshit in the ring. You ever seen him do a traditional karate punch or block in a real fight? His stance is a bit unorthodox but it's still not one of the flat-footed stances karate teaches you. And Shogun made him look silly.

Don't tell me, tell him. Then we could see how silly karate is.

Yes, because then we'll really see how techniques that he never use doesn't work. Makes perfect sense.

And no, I don't need to tell Machida because he already knows the truth, which is why he doesn't use silly karate moves in real combat.
