Video Flagged Dead

This is why I HATE Saturday Night Live

Every single SNL sketch is the same. Let me break it down.

1. Set the scene

2. Find the "Quirky" character

3. Have the other characters notice

4. Amplify quirkiness

5. Have character subtlety tell quirky character his/her quirkiness

6. Further amplify quirkiness

7. Have other characters Really react to annoying character

8. Maximize the character's quirkiness

9. Have the other characters ask person to leave.

It's the same joke almost every single time.

I've been saying this same thing for years. EVERYTHING on SNL post-Phil Heartman/Chris Farley/Norm McDonald fucking sucks.

I know i'll catch flack for this but especially Tina Fey. UnFuckingFunny.

What I can't understand is that they have a whole week to prepare, plus lots of people and writers to spread the workload:

1. Why can't they learn their few lines by heart, at least for some sketches, like theatre-folk can?
2. Why are they not as funny with one week preparation as John Stewart (insert Late nighter of your choice) is with one day preparation, if everyone reads off the teleprompter anyway?

(Yes I realise it is live, but the jokes/sketches really could be better with a week preparation)

Yes, quirky characters are a staple of comedy, and there is often a straight-man there to play off of.
It may be formulaic, but when the performer is talented (do you think the ability to say a lot of inane stuff really fast and not crack a smile is talent? I do.) it can be enjoyable to watch. This, at least, is much better than that stupid Will Ferrel character whose quirk was talking really loud.

Anyway, yeah, this is not a joke repeated over and over, it's a performance.

a lot of hate for a show on in the middle of saturday night that you would have to choose to watch

Not complaining about shit makes the people who make the shit think people actually like their shitty shit.
