As far as I know they dont use canned laughter on the IT crowd, this might have changed for the third season.

DeanoLinehan's writing is very hit and miss. I found Friday's show to be pretty good but sometimes it's really clumsy e.g when Jen is dating someone who "looks" like a magician and is somehow put out by this. That's sub-Seinfeld and it just didn't work.
I'll have to pass on this one as well, mainly because I don't think the joke is that good nor do I see Jen's character being fooled by it.
