I LOVE this song.

May I ask, respectfully, what the point of all this work is?

Creating something impressive whilst working within a very strict and consistent set of constraints can be pretty fun, especially when there is a community of folks doing the same thing.

What's the point of creating any art?

@Sarzy
There is clearly a difference between converting a pre existing thing into another format at grate effort v not making any art at all.

Nothing wrong with doing this project and it can be nice to hear or see preexcisting things in another format or way. Personally id rather just hear new chip music if sum one is going to go to the effort of replotting all the notes into a software package. but hay whatever so long as the person making this enjoyed doing and didn't harm any one in the process who cares.

@ Shuac , As for why sum-one would do this Allot of people like chip tune music , this is most probably because people seem to build up a nostalgia for chip music as its what they hurd as they grew up and its also quite popular at this point in time to make chip tune / pixel art / lofi versions of things as enoughf time has passed from when they were main stream.

I think people in general like to do obscure versions of things just out of interest its often fun to see how different a recognizable tune can be when played with another instrument or different context allowing you to Enjoy something. Id quite like to hear a Tovan throught singing version of Bohemian Rhapsody

oh and obviously some people just like chip tune music in general as some people like specific instruments or arangments , and that would nacesitate people remix , remake songs in a format that alows them to most enjoy it.

Meh, I'm not impressed. 67 votes? really? I have a shit load of mods (mod, it, mtm, xm, s3m) which are alot better. -_-

thing is if u rnt realy into chip tune people for most part r oblivouse , allso if u have never seen these typs of apps it looks far ore impressive than it actualy is,

i think most people would be hugly impressed just looking at FL studio playing a song back.

8-bit?
Don't think so.
Depends on the sound card used. Hearing what appears to be both wavetable and PCM, I would say definitely 16-bit. The SoundBlaster Pro (16-bit) was released BEFORE the 1st release of Impulse Tracker, and I believe so was the AWE32.
Being wrong before, I could be again because, of course, all synthesis could be done in software using only 8-bits of the 16-bit registers of the 32-bit CPU on the 16-bit or 32-bit (or possibly 64-bit) bus in the 'puter.

The samples used are digitized and not FM synth which is usually what is implied when people say 8 bit chip tunes, but the samples are indeed 8bit. They also usually range from 8-22khz and are uncompressed. I think the only mod formats that support 16bit samples were XM and I think mtm (When I last looked up the scene, I saw that one of the formats was upgraded to support full 16 bit stereo samples).

I would guess that the point was the challenge of reproducing a very popular song in a seemingly restrictive format. Like a sidewalk chalk drawing of the Mona Lisa, or a Lego version of the Leaning Tower of Pisa - to approach what is widely regarded as a great piece of art (in this case, modern music) and to pay homage to it in a format not envisioned by the original artist.

I appreciate all of the kind words. As the artist I feel I needed to address what the point of this work was... Fight Club came out during my Junior year in high school. I had never really heard the Pixies before that point. I fell in love with the song and listened to it several hundreds of times over. I also happen to love chiptune and ran impulse tracker from an old 486 that I had had since the 9th grade. Put two and two together, and this was the result. There is a built in function in DosBox to record the screen (ctrl+alt+f5). During playback in record mode all samples/intruments are reduced to 8-bit. Channel constraints are not present in the strictest of settings for "true" 8bit. Who cares? Deal with it. Again, thanks for the kind words. You can check out my other words at: .
