The Man Who Lost His Body

At 19 years old, Ian Waterman caught a virus that destroyed half his nervous system. He was left like a rag doll, with no sense of touch below the neck, and no idea of where his limbs were unless he could see them. The doctors told him that he would never walk, feed himself, or dress himself again. Yet against all the odds, he has made an apparently miraculous recovery. How has he managed it? What does his story reveal about the extraordinary capacities of the human brain?

That is amazing. I don't know if I could do what Ian does. Probably not, because I would be too depressed just knowing that for the rest of my life I was going to need to think out every single little bodily movement. In other words I'd get wrapped up in feeling sorry for myself, I suppose.

Indeed, I've fallen apart over far less. I'll keep Ian in mind next time I don't feel like I can pull myself together.

Is that a testament to his will and perseverance or a demonstration of how shitty and lazy doctors can be?
