Tesla Burning on Roadside ~ Kent, WA. 2013

SEATTLE (AP) — Shares of electric car company Tesla sank more than 6 percent Wednesday after an Internet video showed flames spewing from one of the company's vehicles near Seattle.

Shares of Tesla Motors Inc. fell $12.05 to $180.95 — the stock's biggest one-day decline since July 16.

Actually the battery is in the chassis between the wheels below where you would normally sit in the vehicle. That tesla is on fire in the front, where the "frunk" would be. I would imagine something inside the frunk caught fire, and this has nothing to do with the actual power source as the electric motor is in the back end of the car.

The battery's in the back.

Seriously? This caused the stock to drop when it's probable it had nothing to do with the car itself? What happened to Ferrari's (I think it was Ferrari) stock when they had multiple instances of the same model burst into flames, a few years back?

always count on fear to motivate people, especially unfounded fear.

If anything, it's more likely the whole thing is a plant by a competitor.

You'd be surprised what can cause the stock market to "shift". It's the most unreliable and untrustworthy way of determining wealth, value and demand ever created. We have business districts empty because actually renting them would lower stock prices . . . .

Seems a piece of metal managed to punch a 3" hole in the 1/4" armor plating with, according to Elon Musk, 25 tons of force. The on board computer systems alerted the driver, he exited the freeway as instructed by the system and exited the car. The fire never reached the passenger compartment even after the fire department punctured the protective cover to put the fire out. The battery system has internal fire walls that worked as expected. Musk notes that Tesla's fire rate is much lower than a gas powered fire rate. The company is giving the guy another car as a loaner.

Kinda figured it would be something that would probably have made a Prius detonate across a city block.

The cause for the stock drop is that Tesla's valuation is based almost entirely on perceived future potential for the concept, so the drop isn't all that unreasonable. Something like this, if it did turn out to be some fundamental design flaw in what is pretty much their only product, could totally sink them.
