Tennis Player Makes Very Odd Noises

For your listening pleasure, I present Victoria Azarenka.

it's annoying and that should be enough for them (men or women) not to do it. It's stupid. It's one thing to give out a little grunt every once in a while. This? This sounds nothing like someone going into an extra physical effort, but rather some kid just trying to annoy the hell out of the opponent .

This study suggest that tennis players are clued into where the ball will go by the sound it makes when it strikes the racket. So, covering up that sound with your own sound effects gives you an advantage. I'm not sure the athletes themselves are often aware of why grunting (or warbling) helps them, they've just noticed that it does.

You could make an argument that it's a form of cheating, if indeed it works by depriving the opponent of one of their senses. In the same way that wearing a blinding reflective amulet would be foul play.

I checked that wiki article on her and it's noted that she doesn't make that noise when she practices. It probably is a tactic... an annoying one if so.

Yup, I pretty much stopped watching womens tennis because of players like her and Maria Sharapova, who is just as bad. Grunting in the modern game used to be pretty limited until Monica Seles did it, now it's pretty common. If a player I really like is playing (like Sam Stosur) I will sit through the match, otherwise why bother, you get 90 mins of this.

I have no problem with the grunting when they are making a particular effort to hit hard.

But this chick is adding her own space-theme sound effects! That is not grunting!

I absolutely detest these noises many women players make. It's not needed to hit the shots and we all know that.
Men hit the ball about three times harder and none of them are bellowing like a moose on steroids.

from wikipedia:

Criticism
Azarenka has been criticized by ex-professionals for the noise she makes when hitting the ball. During the 2010 Australian Open quarterfinal between Azarenka and Serena Williams, ex-pro Pam Shriver, who was providing court-side commentary, noted that Azarenka's screams were so long that she was still yelling when Williams returned the ball. She has also been noted for her tendency to lose her temper during matches. In Wimbledon 2011 she grunted at 95 decibels, which caused the chief executive of the All England Lawn and Tennis Club Ian Ritchie to raise the issue with the press. He issued the following statement – "Officials would prefer to see less grunting". Her average screams were recorded to last on average 1.5 seconds. She does not make the noise during practice.

She's clearly got some need to scream that is unrelated to hitting a tennis ball. Somehow I feel this represents much is wrong with the world. This asshole thinks screaming will help her win by disturbing/distracting her opponent.

Vote me off this fucking planet.
