TedxTalks Kellee Santiago - Are Video Games Art?

Are video games art? Video game developer Kellee Santiago argues that video games ARE art.
This TedxTalk has inspired a counter response from Roger Ebert which has caused a lot of discussion in the video game community.

Ebert doesn't play games. It's painfully obvious by reading his response that he has never touched a controller, let alone played any of the games he dismisses. This is the same pattern repeating, the old dismissing the new. Oh joy, another naive and arrogant diatribe. *yawn*

Plus if he did play games he would be twice as fat and during clips for movie reviews he would always yell, "MONSTER KILL" with echo effects--™ every time a group of people die.

Argh, can't get the video to play. I've been watching the debate though, on the side, though... I may as well comment here, since I don't really care to comment in many communities elsewhere.

I love Ebert, I love video games and I love art. I should mention that.

My opinion on the topic, in 3 quick points:

1. Video games don't NEED to be art, but they can be. Just like so many other mediums. (Movies, architecture, writing, etc...)

2. People can say video games aren't art are until they are blue in the face. And their efforts and opinions will be just as moot. Art isn't arbitrated by experts - it changes definitions along with societal shifts. If that weren't the case, there would never be any change, movements, etc...

3. Calling something art doesn't suddenly raise it to a higher level of value in regards to the human experience. And saying something isn't art doesn't have any impact on its REAL value to humanity. Some of the most valuable things in human society are "not art." In fact, some things are far more valuable, influential and important than "art." Video games, actually, may end up being far more than JUST art. So again, moot discussion...
