TED: Five Dangerous Things to Let Your Kids Do

Speaker Gever Tulley explains the necessity of learning through experience for children. When I grew up I did 4 of the 5 and am no worse for the wear.

It's sad: all of these things are useful skills that help children understand how things work. They teach them how to do things safely, but the catch is they need adult supervision for at least the beginning of it to make sure they don't do serious damage to themselves.

Since adults want to have kids, but not be parents, we have the stupid-proof the world so our kids can stay dumb.

And somehow we're confused why professional wrestling is such a well-funded industry...

I've done all of those things and then some (well, except break the DMCA because that wasn't around then, but I did copy some tapes). I remember as a kid I went with my dad to my aunt's house so he could fix something. I borrowed a few of his tools and disassembled her exercise bike when he wasn't looking. Even though I got in trouble, I think he was proud of me.

Watched this last night on the TED site and then I took my daughter outside and showed her how to make a flamethrower with a can of WD-40 and a match. I can't wait to find the 50 Dangerous Things book and start going through it with my kids.

I'm entirely for this message. Stop coddling your damn kids... let them get dirty, let them get hurt, let them find limits and learn how things work... absolutely agree with what he says.

Having said that, I recently found a slide (yeah, those things you actually need a projector to see) of me as a kid in a park near our old house. It had a playground, and in that playground was a wooden post about 10 feet high with metal rods coming out of it in a random fashion. There was a photo of me at the top of said post (probably 6 years old), 10 feet in the air... I would shit a brick if it was one of my kids that high up a post with nothing but some wood chips for them to fall on...
