The firing of football coach Joe Paterno following news of assistant coach Jerry Sandusky's alleged sexual abuse outrages Penn State students.
Yogisays...

Ok try not to flame me too hard because I could have this absolutely backwards. Buuuut Joe knew what exactly about this situation? That someone saw a child being abused? Did he know about the full on raping?

I guess I don't understand the outrage against Joe if he fucked up and didn't report that someone said one of his coaches was abusing children. I get that all it takes for evil to persist is for good man to go silent and all the rest of it. However I'd like someone who has always acted perfectly in a leadership role to step forward and say Joe fucked up. He could've very well fucked up...but I'm confused as to why everyone believes this idea that he should've known this was all THAT bad and he should be reporting it. It seems to me that the people that actually witnessed this situation are to blame and not the head guy just because he's the head guy.

I could have that completely wrong because I'm not positive about the facts and I don't think anyone knows what Joe knew. I'd just like to remind everyone that this is an 84 year old, perhaps sorta brain addled man and he's being blamed for not reporting something everyone else could've reported. I'm not sure I completely understand the situation.

IS THERE NO SHAME?

Joe Paterno was fired by the Penn State Board of Trustees on Wednesday night as head football coach of Penn State. It was the first good decision that has been made in the last two decades by the leaders of Penn State. The man was told that his Defensive coordinator was seen in the locker room shower raping a 10 year old boy in 2002. He did not call the police and report this crime. He and the other top officials at Penn State brushed this crime under the rug, allowing at least seven more young boys to be raped by this monster. The 28 year old graduate assistant not only did nothing to stop the crime he witnessed, but he accepted a position as an assistant coach, knowing that Paterno and the Athletic Director never did anything to hold Sandusky accountable for his crime. Sandusky was still on campus working out as of last week. The actions of all the players in this disgusting example of how far our society has degenerated are enough to make someone lose all hope for humanity:

• Jerry Sandusky creates a charitable organization so he can gain access to little boys. Multiple incidents are witnessed on campus from 1994 through 2002. A mother reports Sandusky to the Penn State police in 1998 and nothing is done by the men in the Administration. The investigation is dropped, but Tim Curley forces Sandusky to retire in 1999. It is clear that everyone in the top echelon of Penn State knew Sandusky was a deviant pedophile. But letting it become public would have been a black mark on the football program and could have reduced the huge profits generated by Paterno’s kingdom.
• After his forced retirement he is still given access to the campus and locker room facilities. He is caught having anal sex with a 10 year old boy in the locker room shower by a 28 year old man, who chooses not to intervene and save the boy. Joe Paterno does the absolute minimum when informed of this horrific crime. After this crime is covered up by all the key men running the show at Penn State, it just becomes business as usual for Joe and his cronies.
• Sandusky continues to rape little boys for the next eight years because of the cowardice and complete lack of morality exhibited by the men in high places at Penn State.
• With the issuance of the grand jury report last week, the psychotic nature of these men was on display for the world to witness. In a stunning display of arrogance and hubris, Paterno and the President of Penn State announced their full support for the Athletic Director and VP of Finance who were arrested. These men did not think they did anything wrong. They clung to the fact that they adhered to the laws created by other men. In a despicable display, Joe Paterno led a cheer at a pep rally in front of his house with his arms raised in victory. At least eight boys had their lives ruined and Joe Paterno leads a cheer.
• The Board of Trustees summoned the courage to fire Paterno and the President last night. In another display that makes me wonder about the future of our country, thousands of students rioted in support of Joe Paterno, breaking windows, turning over news vans, and starting fires. Are these young people incapable of critical thinking and are just driven by emotion and mindless rage? Can’t they distinguish between facts and lies? Do they care more about football than innocent children being raped?

Phreezdrydsays...

The people running things decided the reputation of the university and its highly profitable football program were more important than the lives of the children raped. The whole situation is way beyond sad, and now the heads, no matter how legendary and beloved, are rolling, with giant black asterisks on them.

EMPIREsays...

If someone is aware of child abuse going on around him, and not only does nothing about it, but chooses to ignore the situation, should be put on trial as an accomplice. It's one thing seeing someone get killed or beat up, and then not report it out of fear that the same thing could happen to you. It's quite another knowing that a certain person you know and work with is raping children and not give a shit because a fucking championship is more important.

And those students?? WTF??? Is that a school for the retarded??

Yogisays...

I think the students are upset because they believe Joe was made out to be a scapegoat. When there are other people in charge who knew about this and were reported to. Again I don't know that much about it, and actually there's not even that many facts out at the moment that can be verified so I don't understand why everyone is being all self righteous and saying who fucked up.

The Penn State Board of Trustees fired Joe and the school President Spanier. I'd say this is a pretty good start. The kids are mindless youths and don't have a clue what they're talking about.

Instead of playing devil's advocate and repeatedly saying you don't actually know the facts, it would probably serve you better to get informed. Here is a copy of the grand jury report released that prompted the actions of the Board of Trustees.

I can't find Joe Paterno's name anywhere in that grand jury report. I see how he could've acted, I don't see how everyone can sit there and with 20/20 hindsight they'd know exactly what to do.

Mikus_Aureliussays...

As long as I've been involved in education, the reporting of alleged abuse has been a fixture in yearly orientations. Poll the teachers in any school or college in this country, and they all know by now that if you see or hear something you report it. If you report it, it's your boss's responsibility to figure out the truth. If you don't report it, you are responsible for whatever is discovered later. Failure to report is a criminal offense in the states I've worked in.

Naturally it's understandable for someone who doesn't work in education to see this as a gray area or a judgement call. If you'd had to sit through teacher/coach orientations every year, I expect you'd be less likely to assume that a school employee wouldn't/shouldn't have known what to do.

You can't find Paterno's name? So maybe illiteracy is your bigger problem then.

Like I said before, read the report then form your opinion.

When the 1% Fuck little children, the 99% cover it up.

What people haven't been talking about is that there was yet another person who witnessed the guy having sex in the shower with a kid; a janitor saw him having oral sex with victim number 8. He went back and told the entire janitorial staff what he saw. The guy was so hysterical that the entire staff thought he was going to have a heart attack. He reported the incident to his superior, and the guy told him to contact the police he chose to report it. However, there was a lot of pressure to not report the incident, because they were all afraid that they would lose their jobs if they reported the incident. Thus, it never got reported.

It's truly amazing to think of the number of people that knew about it...and how nothing ever happened. This went on for almost 20 years. Jon Stewart and so many other people say how it's inconceivable that 'they wouldn't stop it from happening and/or call the police immediately.' Really, most people aren't like that. You learn in first semester psychology that most people aren't like that. Most people are embarassed that they would be making a huge fuss on something that they don't know a lot about...even if they make a huge fuss about it through unofficial channels.

The biggest pisser is that the *university police* even knew about it, and they likely had a lot of internal pressure to keep it hush because they as well felt that their job security might be at risk if they pursue it. They even knew about a currently unofficial victim number 9 who is currently overseas in the military & can't return to be on trial.

Again, they were all afraid of losing their jobs because this asshole was so high ranking that they were afraid to do anything about it. THE 99% ARE THEMSELVES MAKING A LARGER DISPARITY AGAINST THE 1%. If you treat the 1% as untouchable in their position of power, they will be. If you demand equal treatment, then own up to it...especially right now.

It's amazing to me that no one needs facts or anything to convict someone of shielding a child rapist. Just say he did it and "OH MY GOD HE DID IT!" Pathetic...the American public school system is a joke churning out morons who don't understand what Objectivity is.

Don't you have a way of tying this all into a 9/11 conspiracy?

Wow, marbles, you sure came out of that argument looking like a fool, didn't you? Do you know how to argue using facts? None of your posts that I've seen show that you do. It's not often but every once in a while the phrase, "I've never won an argument with an idiot." pops into my mind, and I'm sure Yogi can empathize. Now, that's the quote verbatim that I heard when the phrase entered my sphere of knowledge but personally I'm more cautious about calling people 'idiot's or 'stupid' as I believe (know) that people can change given the chance and that their current level of knowledge or aptitude at discourse, while it may be lacking, is not their possible maximum level of knowledge/aptitude.

Yeah, I'm the one looking like a fool. I was crying about being clueless and when someone tried to give me the facts, I told the fucking moron to fuck off with their fucking useless facts. I WIN, right?

As for the rest of your post, incoherent much?

Fuck you, yogi. First, you're being a dick. Second, and much worse you made me agree with marbles. Not cool.

As for Paterno, he's not the evil fuck that was raping kids, but he should have done better. Losing his job is a justified response IMO. As for the college students, they're idiots, but that's hardly surprising, they're college students. Fortunately, there is a cure for that. They will grow up and realise they were idiots.

You won't bother to read the grand jury report.. I'm left wondering what "facts" would actually satisfy you if the grand jury report doesn't...

It would probably help if you shut your spew hole for 3 seconds and opened your eyes...

And I quote:

"Schultz testified that he was called to a meeting with Joe Paterno and Tim Curley, in which Paterno reported "disgusting" and "inappropriate" conduct in the shower by Sanduskey upon a young boy, as reported to him by a student or graduate student."

So it was reported to Paterno and he did nothing about it. If he passed it up the line expecting higher ups to deal with it, then failed to act when it became clear they wouldn't, he's as culpable as the rest of the pricks. No matter that he only suspected, if he had stepped in at that point, more boys might have been spared the torment of being molested (read the rest of the 'stupid fucking report' if you want the gory details).

He's lucky he was only fired and nationally disgraced.
