Spencer Tunick, Nude Art

WIKI: Spencer Tunick (born January 1, 1967) is an American artist. Tunick was born in Middletown, New York, USA. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Emerson College in 1988. He is best known for his installations that feature large numbers of nude people posed in artistic formations.

In these images the nude form becomes abstract due to the sheer number so closely placed together. Known as installations, they are often situated in urban locations throughout the world. He also has done some "Beyond The City" woodland and
beach installations and still does individuals and small groups occasionally.

I find some of the images really eerie, disturbing. I think because the people are laying down, it's like they've all been killed. Some photos remind me of Auschwitz photos, with naked bodies everywhere, except those images showed emaciated corpses all piled on top of each other. These corpses are all healthy looking.

I would agree with persephone on this one. The pictures with the large amounts of bodies lying down looks like a crime scene of a genocide. The pictures with only a couple of models in them are beautiful though, probably because the photographer had to pick his frame more carefully knowing it had to be a good frame to draw peoples attension with out 100 naked people lying down.

Upvote for Spencer... My wife and I took part in the Melbourne, Australia one (the one with all the bums in the air in the park), which at the time was the largest number of people to ever have posed for him (since beaten).

We got there before sunrise, and it was raining, and cold, but we all nudied up and lay in puddles of water on the road and then in the park and by our mighty Yarra river.

It was a great experience, people stopped noticing the nakedness after a while and everyone felt so free. A cyclist riding through the park at the time was encouraged to nudy up... and he did, joined in the fun, was great, recommend it to anyone.

I do agree that some of them can look like large numbers of bodies, and unfortunately the print that we received for being a part of it was the one on the road that did have that feel to it, rather than the bum in the air one that is obviously not dead bodies.

Still, great stuff, love his work.
