Space Engine 0.9.8.0 Trailer

This is a trailer of Space Engine 0.9.8.0. All shots recorded in-game.

Space Engine is a free space simulation program that lets you explore the whole universe. Areas of the known universe are represented using actual astronomical data, while regions uncharted by astronomy are generated procedural.

Please note that Space Engine 0.9.8.0 is a beta version, which means it is still in development. Not all astronomical objects are included yet and it may contain several bugs.

Looks cool but I need some sort of creative control or I tend to get bored. I'd enjoy reordering matter and creating new celestial events. Wake me up when the future is here.

This trailer misses the exact thing that No Man's Sky trailers realized - you have to show the transition in scale. If you want to impress, you need to seamlessly transition from surface to orbit to solar system to galaxy. If you don't do that, the celestial objects just look like balls with high res textures and the surface shots look like Bryce 3D renders, but there's nothing to connect them.

Obviously you haven't played with Space Engine. It's not much of a game, but I find myself lost in it for hours just exploring. The shots you see are made in-game, traveling at many thousand times the speed of light. Every star you see, you can literally travel to. It might have planets and moons in orbit which you can visit, or that "star" might even be an entirely new galaxy with billions more stars.

It does have a game mode with space ships, but I have never tried it. I just load it up from time to time, click a random star and go to it.

Ah the obligatory zooming through space with large white blobs streaking past your face like what doesn't happen.
