Soldier plays soccer with Iraqi kids

Wumpussays...

Pffft...obviously military propaganda constructed by Evil Bush and his Evil administration. People who believe this are so stoopid.

schmawysays...

Good things happen every day in Iraq that I'm sure we don't hear about. Not sure this is one of them, though. He's putting those kids in great danger.

Unrelated Sift Q: Is there any point to voting when a vid makes it to the main page?

Nevermind. Read the FAQ's like a good boy.

phelixiansays...

The ball is a bomb!!! Duck and cover!

No seriously though, that's the sorta footage we should see some of. I'm sure our policies over there suck, but the men and women are human, seemd like we can forget that sometimes with all the wargy images of explosions etc....

Kruposays...

I agree with leeweek, it is *cute - for the kids rather than the rifle part though.

theo, I'm rather certain (hopeful?) that Wumpus was kidding.

choggiesays...

...phelixian makes the point, and I'll add that what we see with our eyes, in snips and clips, is flipped andd spun, and lined up in a row for our digestion....its programming....humans are humans, regardless of the side they are goverend by...Christmas in the Trenches, and those kids were only 6-10 yeasr older-

i still think the soldier with the bottle of water wasn't the bad guy....you need to study the whole thing not just watch and react....

relnsays...

While its nice to see some positive videos from iraq, I'm not too crazy about him playing ball while holding a loading rifle for several reasons...

ivixsays...

>You never, ever have your weapon outside of your immediate reach when in a combat zone.

Maybe this is the kind of hardass mentality which lost you the war.
Not much combat going on there.

Unsung_Herosays...

Ivix, that is a pretty ignorant comment. Please do yourself a favor and read war books or watch "Saving Private Ryan" or for god's sake just look at the world around you. You will notice that bad things happen when people don't expect them to... I'm sure most people would avoid a car accident if they could... "Then why do people have car accidents?" Is what you (ivix) might say with your limited thought process.
haha, sorry for ranting on Ivix... I'm sure he's a good kid (If you are a she sorry.. ivix sounds more "guy-ish")

Now for the comment on the actual movie... This is what I would be doing with my spare time in Iraq ...amazingly enough he is able to juggle the ball to some degree wearing full gear.

rembarsays...

@ivix: Reality is that an attack could happen when he was playing soccer, he needs to have the weapon on hand. Sucks, but that's pretty much how war fucks things up for people.

It's nice to see a postive video coming out of Iraq for a change, although I'm not crazy about that rifle juggle.

gorgonheapsays...

I'm sick of the media talking shit about what's going on there, stuff like this happens everyday and no camera is around to see it. The media is trying to make the war much worse then it is just ask any soldier who's come back.

scottishmartialartssays...

"Maybe this is the kind of hardass mentality which lost you the war. "

No, that's the kind of mentality that will keep that soldier alive. At any moment in that video, that soldier could have come under fire. Had he left his rifle with his buddy, or in his vehicle, there would be several moments from when he comes under fire to when he retrieves his rifle that he is completely unarmed and defenseless. Those several moments could make all the difference between whether he, his fellow soldiers, and the children there, live or die.

It is for that reason, among others such as theft and safety, that the notion of your weapon never leaving your immediate reach is drilled into soldiers from the moment they first begin handling a weapon in basic training.

Kruposays...

Seriously - I shamelessly linked to my blog and this stupidly amusing (to me) post where I compared calculators/rifles/sidearms (and the occasion where I forgot my 'rifle' and had to use my 'sidearm').

Good times.
