Another School Cop Body Slams a Girl

The incident happened around 7:10 a.m. when Jasmine Darwin attempted to break up a fight between her sister and another student. That's when Rolesville High School Resource Officer Ruben De Los Santos picked her up and slammed her to the ground.

She was not in the fight....her sister was, and she was trying to break it up verbally, according to numerous accounts. She never hit anyone at all.
What say you now, because she didn't fight in school and she sure as shit got bodyslammed?

Esoogsaid:

Don't fight in school, and you won't get body slammed.

It's OK for her to punch another student in the face repeatedly though....

Nope nope nope nope.

Fuck that noise.

Even if she was fighting (which she apparently wasn't), the cop is easily twice her size, and (hopefully) a trained police officer. He should be able to restrain her without resorting to this kind of tactic.

Hell, even if he feels the situation is that out of hand that he is unable to restrain her, use pepper spray. At least that won't leave any lasting damage.

At the end of the day, we are talking about an unarmed teen girl. There are levels of reasonable force and levels of excessive force. This is clearly in the excessive region.

The sad thing is, it seems to be a maneuver that cops are wont to default to with kids. In the related video, a school officer body slammed a 12 year old girl. Elsewhere in Texas, an officer bodyslammed a teen girl for being at a pool party without a pass. That case is being taken to court, by the way, with the taxpayers possibly on the hook for 5 million.

We are doing something wrong when the only move that an officer can do to take an underage individual down is a bodyslam. This isn't fake wrestling, that isn't a canvas ring with some shock absorbing capabilities, and she isn't an actor who knows how to take a fall. Real and permanent damage could happen.

That girl at the pool party in Texas, she wasn't slammed for not having a pass, but for refusing to follow instructions and leave the scene of a riot the cops were trying to control. The video here is really not defensible. She isn't fighting against the officer. As soon as he wraps arms around her to lift her up, he is in complete control of her body. Slamming her down serves only to injure and punish, not gain control of a dangerous person.

I'd like to see footage of what happened directly before the slam. It's hard to judge whether the slam was justified or not when you don't have objective context. Witness testimony is inherently unreliable, as it is skewed by bias and students are far more likely to side with a fellow student over a cop.

While that's a fair point in general, I really struggle to think of a situation where that slam would be justified.

Maybe if she had a weapon of some description, but nothing in the report indicates that.
