Samurai pulls off fastest submission in history -whole story

Top-ranked submission wrestler Josh Barnett summarizes what happened.

Japanese fighter Ryo Chonan instantly submits Brazilian champion Anderson Silva with a "flying scissor" take down that transitions mid-air into a heel-hook submission.

In a flying scissor, you jump and put one leg in front of his waist and one leg behind his knees, using your legs as a scissor to take him to the ground.

A heel-hook is a very dangerous submission in which you twist his ankle while controlling his body with your legs, creating severe torque on the ankle and knee.

Silva is forced to tap immediately or suffer a very painful and damaging injury.

Little guy was all "my god where is my teeth" And big guy was all murder and stuff. Suddenly "zipt" and big guy is tap-dancing with his hands or he won´t dance again. He never, ever expected or saw that coming. wow.

^That's one of the best complements a video can get

The sport is young enough that people are still figuring out where the boundaries are of what you can do in a fight that has almost no rules.

I remember seeing my old master do flying scissor kicks at head height with incredible force. I remember thinking at the time "what in the hell are you supposed to do about that?" Very scary move and brutally effective.

Thats ridiculous! Silva's always been right next to invincible, make no mistake the mans got great striking skills and great groundgame, just the fact that he went down in seconds is baffling.

Also, its interesting to notice that out of the 4 losses within his MMA career 3 of them have been made by Japanese fighters. The only other being Luiz Azeredo, a fellow Brazilian.

How is that the fastest submission in history? It was in the middle of the round.

That's like saying that Britney Spears is the craziest celebrity around, when we all know that Tom Cruise is exponentially more psycho.

...it was still frickin' awesome, though.

Awe. Some. I've never even heard of MMA before - may have to look into it if it is even close to this cool with any regularity. Anyone know if it is, or was this an exceptional occurrence?

Human limbs are incredibly weak in torsion. That's why attaching lever arms to your extremities (read:skis) is such a monumentally bad idea.

Which is why skis come with bindings that release under torsion. Though that doesn't stop stupid people from setting them too tight and destroying their limbs.

Good thing it was only my left knee...
