In Germany it's illegal for an employer to fire you if you are sick. you get your salary for several weeks. and after that time if you're still sick the health insurance pays parts of your salary (you can chose to get 100% paid, but that will cost you extra). And you cannot lose your health insurance because every person has the right for health insurance (not only the right, you are legally required to have one even if you don't want to and hence the public insurance companys cannot reject you). your sickness requires heart transplantation? dialysis? and you have no job or just basic coverage? doesn't matter. even if you have no job or if you can't take a job you'll get quite good welfare money plus health insurance and that as long as you live if necessary. do people take advantage of that? of course. there are folks who just don't want to work. but hey, fuck them, i don't care that i pay for them and you know why? because i know whatever happens i will always be able to buy food and go to hospital. and if you go and try to sort out the "bad apples" just how would you to that? who decides if someone really could work or not? what about the difficult cases such as mental problems? it would surely lead to incorrect decisions and therefore to injustice. open a store and you will get stuff stolen, step into a plane and maybe it will get hijacked. have a good welfare and healthcare system and people will take advantage of it. i'm pretty happy that i live in a country of "social justice" and "socialism" as Glenn would describe it, especially after living in Ireland where things aren't as easy. Because over here it works. Just as in France, Sweden, Canada (i believe) etc.

He's being taken advantage of, perhaps on the grounds that the ends justify the means. He's also up there because you can't make a constructive argument about a kid with a dead mom (not that GB, MM or RL really tried).
