Redwood Falls - GDC 2007 Demo

This is Redwood Falls - An FPS concept demo - sadly, nothing much happened with this - Our Mr Zonbie was the environment artist for this demo :)

Uses the Unreal 3 Engine
Strangely, some people on the internet think this is a PS3 game (nope) and others think it's Alan Wake (what!)

Fascinating to see the amount of work that goes into things that lead nowhere as such.

I must say that the environments are the best part of this really. The combat looks pretty terrible (just walking away from an enormous enemy looks ridiculous)... but the environment and mood of this is brilliant.

This was fun I also did the Molatov Cocktail textures and shaders, and other shaders.
No idea how or why this has surfaced now, but it so nice to see lots of sites giving this positive feedback

Should also point out this being a concept demo, means it's to show off certain aspects of what was planned. This means that AI was not something we were demonstrating...it was not the selling point. This is why the creature is hovering near the light more. We did this I think was (edit) 12-16 weeks from start to finish. There was only 8 of us But you know, I'm still proud of this (can you tell by my shameless promoting!)

Yeah, I thought that the poor combat would be due to it being just a demo.

And 12 weeks... amazing work.

Your texture work is beautiful, and the environmental effects are great (as is the idea of being inside the shack and being able to shoot through the walls at the creature).

So, did anything come of this? Did it get any of you further work or start something else off in a similar vain?

Great work Zonbie. Feels very cold and even though I'm not playing I can feel the snow crunching underfoot. I'd want to play a game in that setting!

I'd love to hear your stories of being in the trenches, particularly around crunch time. Do you watch Code Monkeys?

I'm just thrilled about where games have gotten to, and where they're going. Especially FPS games. They've basically arrived at the extent of my childhood fantasies of what games could be, stuff I used to think about in the Intellivion and NES days.

Man that looked great. Disappointing there won't be a finished game

I know you were probably going to add one, but I kinda liked the absence of a HUD - seemed to add to the immersive quality.

Definitely a great looking environment...
