cheesemoosays...Definitely my favorite result.
twiddlessays...Just saw this episode tonight. Wow. They do some good stuff from time to time, but this was an incredible result.
messengersays...Better than the time they blew up the cement truck, and that one was just for fun!
castlessays...So how do I get my water heater to do that?

In the show they mentioned they disabled the thermostat that would normaly turn off the heat at about 140 degrees. They then showed with a busted thermostat the backup safety is a pressure relief valve. So the second step was to cap off the pressure relief valve which Adam mentioned people actually do more often then you would think. Thinking that the open pipe was from some old plumbing and since it sometimes drips water they figure they can just cap it.BTW...don't try this at home.
Spoon_Gougesays...Saw the show. Loved the results. One of the few tests they did with that much action that involved no explosives.
Cool as hell.
ReverendTedsays...With a result like that, it's lucky it went straight up and landed so close to the test site. With that kind of power, it seems like it could have ended up a long way away - potentially with unforeseen consequences.
Grimmsays...If you get a chance track down and watch the full episode. They first tried it on a 6gal tank filled with water. When that failed it was kind of a dud compared to this...the seams at the bottom failed and all the steam released but no left off. For the second attempt it was a 30gal and this time they only filled it 80% with water and got a spectacular result and this was without a little house covering it so even though you did not have the destruction of the house you had a real nice shot of the lift-off on the high speed camera. This video shows the third attempt with a 52gal and the house built around it since part of the "myth" was that the blast would be strong enough to go through a house.
