vaire2ubesays...no ordinance just slugs at such high velocity they destroy targets
lasers that can destroy flying objects
mechanical exoskeletons from Alien to help move cargo
the navy has all your base.
Pring4says...According to the logo, this project has aspirations of sending these rails from the arctic circle to anywhere in the world. I support this.
Peroxidesays...I will not be impressed until they can fire food into areas of the world experiencing famine.
siftbotsays...Tags for this video have been changed from 'navy, railgun, future weapons' to 'navy, railgun, future weapons, velocitas eradico, america fuck yeah' - edited by NetRunner
NetRunnersays...The project's motto is Velocitas Eradico - Speed Kills.
Somebody's a fuckin' comedian.
juliovega914says...I am guessing that the project is using a hybrid system, a powder propellant and an accelerating coil. Gets the acceleration of both systems.

Actually, a Google translate would lead me to believe "Speed Obliterates" which is just fucking AWESOME.

Really? That seems unlikely to me.
Although I was wondering what the explosion was, but I figured it had some exotic explanation related to the vaporized metal.

The friction of the payload ignites the air as it fires.

dagsays...Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag.(show it anyway)
Rail guns have the potential to send payloads into orbit. The problem is that the acceleration is so sudden that anything besides a metal slug gets smooshed. The solution is to have a really long rail gun that provides more gentle acceleration. http://nextbigfuture.com/2008/02/railguns-for-space-launch.html

And the more local the greed and politics the greater the suffering.
People living in Somalia and North Korea are at the top of the list of the world's hungry people, and 90% of the reason for their suffering is the evil men around them denying them the ability to feed themselves because it benefits the evil men.
KnivesOutsays...The visual basic UI somebody built to control that monster made me throw up a little.
What the fuck, military?
dannym3141says...Am i not right to take from this that it's BAE's railgun being tested by some navy research program?
Lowensays...I LOVE the sound this makes.
zombieatersays...I wonder how many bake sales they had to hold to raise the money for this thing, huh? Am I right? Hahaha...ha...heh...nevermind.
MonkeySpanksays...Actually Air Force Space Command (AFSPC) has all your base!
They deal with ICMB prevention, space superiority, and cyberspace/telecommunication kill-switches. That's where the money goes these days, not to NASA.

And contraceptives. Every bit of food sent to famished regions should be accompanied by an equivalent amount of contraceptives.
acidSpinejokingly says...Coming soon to a village near you, poor people (not the actuall gun, that will be situated somewhere well out of range, in the brave zone, operated by lots of brave people defending freedom and bravery or whatever)

Hate to burst your bubble, but at earth's surface escape velocity the kinetic energy of a projectile is only 32 times its weight in TNT. With suborbital flights and resistance on reentry the effect would be considerably less than that. Wind during the ascent would throw it off farther than the destruction radius unless the slug was really huge (multiple tons) or they put in some internal guidance system that can survive the biggest EMP ever.
vaire2ubesays...Ok.. imagine THIS but .. huge.
The magnetic rail is what accelerates the slug, at such high speeds that the impact itself causes an explosion
vaire2ubesays...tell the air force to get working on the stargate!
