I'm ashamed to admit this, but I've always taken his rants as an Andy Rooney "grinds my gears" type of things, when really his rants are more tongue-in-cheek than that.

"haha" works, and i use lol sarcastically all the time!

I use 'lol' as a real life word. Few things are more sarcastic and patronizing than a good real life 'lol'.

I disagree with his definition of the smiley face. It means that the previous statement was lighthearted. That's different from "I didn't mean it." Though it could mean you were only kidding, it could also mean "I don't mean that as an insult."

I dislike "lol" no matter what, but concede that it's far worse when people use it to laugh at themselves, especially when they haven't even said anything funny.

You all know someone like this. They write tweets or Facebook updates that say things like, "just made a sandwich for lunch!!! LOL!"
