John Carmack of Id answers more questions

I really wish people would just get back into the original Quake. Not many people play it online but I still think the multiplayer game mechanics as well as the blocky, dark, graphics are better than nearly all multiplayer games to this day. I've been playing it here and there the past couple of weeks but it's usually only a couple of people from Europe.

Also, Carmack talking math with this guy is hilarious. I would have done the same thing... "Hmmm oh (I have no idea of what you're talking about - ShgzjhsdStokes Equations?) Now, getting back to the hardware settings."

Absolutely! Most visceral (and imo best) multiplayer game ever made.

Dude, I wished people would go back to DOOM 1 and 2. Get off my lawn.

I definitely enjoy the old arcadey shooters more than the pseudo-realistic shooters that are everywhere now, but I no longer have the reflexes required to kick ass at them.

Man, about 90% of what he said went completely over my head. The rest I understand thanks to hasty wiki searches. I've long wondered why Consoles with much less grunt can run games smoothly that some top end computers can struggle with...now I know.

From what I've read they are looking to get back to the original Quake style, more gothic than scifi etc. Personally my favorite has always been Quake3Arena, and ofc QuakeLive. Rockets, Rail and Shaft, the movement, the maps and the powerups. Perfect multiplayer game.

shagen454says...

Definitely. I hate the entire concept of "Next-Gen" which is somewhat bullshit anyway because of making games cross-platform with consoles. But, I really don't appreciate peoples critiques on graphics most of the time. I love all sorts of eras/engines why not just update games like Doom & Quake with modern net-code? I'll pay $5 on steam! Haha!

Me too. I replayed some old games and ugh I suck in them. LOL! I don't play new computer games anymore, even demos nad betas (very rare) due to lack of free times and motivations. I do play Flash games as you can see on AQFL.net.

This guy's awesome and he summed up something about programming, particular games, that I was trying to explain to a non-computer friend who does understand a bit of calculus. "When you're dealing with exponentials, if you slice it enough times everything becomes linear."

Calculus is all about drawing curves, and using a single equation to define those curves with effectively infinite resolution. The cool thing about computers that can do millions of operations per second is that you can skip the calculus and describe the curves by just slicing time up... the computer has enough speed to calculate Y if X=1, Y if X=2, Y if X=3, Y if X=4, etc.. making calculus largely unnecessary (or redundant... in 2D anyhow). It's a fun thought.

they are incredibly crude by todays standards?

You should try Bad Co 2 at 2560x1600 with a high end video card. Antialiasing is not required at all at these resolutions. It looks insanely incredible. BF3 is going to go that much further. The old games are nostalgic but if you are pining to stick with them I suspect you have not been exposed to enough high end PC gaming of today.

Yeah, Doom and Quake are sort of their own thing. They are being updated as other games. Doom is still around in the form of Serious Sam and Painkiller. Quake multiplayer is around... currently I play TF2 for the kind of fix I used to get from Quake I/II/III.

And I'm playing BFBC2 at 2560x1600 right now... I task-switched out because I'm so ADD lately. 4XMSAA still helps improve the image a bit if you look close. I could probably turn it up more but yeah it's just not necessary beyond a certain point.
