"I Believe" - perfect blend of blasphemy and faith

Think it's stupid or a true believer -- you can both enjoy this song.

Before 1978, black men couldn't be priests in the church. Their black skin was the "mark of Cain" and they were all direct descendents of Abel's killer. (Every male is a priest in the church.)

The Civil Rights movement in the 60's led to federal legislation. The Mormon Church was being threatened with... losing their tax exemption maybe? I'm unclear.

They were also having trouble getting black people to join and their proselytizing efforts in Africa weren't going so well, as you can imagine.

So the President of the Church got a message from God in 1978 that God has now forgiven Cain's descendents and they can now be priests.

Personally, I think this is behind why the Mormon Church pushes back so hard on gay rights. They are afraid the government will step in and punish them for anti-gay stances. So they want to get it in the law to protect themselves.

I may have some of the details wrong -- this is the essence of it.

in 1978, God changed his mind about black people... (??)

bareboards2 is mostly correct...except for the part about all males being "priests". It is a title that they use but other then the title itself it really has nothing to do with what most people perceive as a "priest" in more traditional religions. He might be confusing it with the "priesthood" which male members receive starting at the age of 12 (Deacon) and progress in stages (14 Teacher, 16 Priest, 19 Elder, etc...). But the rest is spot on...until 1978 black members could not hold the preisthood because of the "mark of Cain".

I don't know about the rest of you, but mormonism is one of the stupidest, most childishly-obvious moronic shams ever. It's not even funny there are people actually stupid enough to believe in that crap.

edit: and I think it looks all the more insane to someone who is not american.

Once you let go of magical thinking, EVERY religion looks just as stupid. Mormonism and Scientology get picked on more because they are more recent, but if you look at the stories that are the foundation for any religion, they are all absurd.

I mean, a woman gives birth to a child without a father? Wasn't that in Phantom Menace?

Grimmsays...

Exactly! If only people could look at their own beliefs with the same skeptical eye.>> ^MaxWilder:

All religions are complete bullshit, don't get me wrong. But it's as Sam Harris once said, you take christianism, pile on another set of stupid shit on top of it, and you get mormonism. So obviously by that reasoning, Mormonism is even stupider than Christianism.

Grimmsays...

I don't agree...it's the difference between the bullshit your familiar with and the bullshit your not familiar with.

How about an ancient jew building a boat big enough to store not just two of each animal but 14 of each and every bird, 14 of each and every clean animal, and 2 of each every unclean animal?

or

Ancient jews taking a boat to the America's?

If you can buy into the first it's not much of a stretch to buy into the second.>> ^EMPIRE:

Not exactly.

Yes, an old man building a giant boat to fit every single species of animals on the planet for 40 days is completely ridiculous.
But if on top of that you add... "oh and he was told to do that by Xenu, the alien overlord". Then it's even stupider. (I know xenu has nothing to do with noah lol. I was just making a point).

Yes, the bullshit I'm used to is still bullshit. But if someone then adds another pile of crap on top of that bullshit, it becomes an even bigger pile of shit. (sorry for all the scat).

If someone is stupid enough to believe the first part, I'm sure it won't take much to believe the second part, but it doesn't mean it isn't even stupider.

Grimmsays...

I would argue it doesn't mean the first is less stupid.

Does it really make a difference if he was told by "Xenu, the alien overlord" instead of "Yahweh , the invisible magic man in the sky"? It only seems less stupid because there is some familiarity with one over the other.

The song was enjoyable to listen too, not entirely offensive while still making a few good/funny points. Fairly well balanced in my biased opinion.

@Grimm @EMPIRE You were both right for the points you were focusing on:

1. A pile of 8 rocks of any size + 3 rocks of any size is a bigger pile of rocks than the original 8 rocks without the additional 3.

2. A bunch of new rocks of any size stacked on some other large rocks doesn't affect the size of the original large rocks. Only our perception and interest in the original large rocks can be altered due to time for tolerance and the introduction of new rocks to the pile.

We could list out every stupid thing in all religions (or inherently change resistant belief systems), and rate the qualities of stupidity and the period of time in which they have been integrated into areas of society, but at final review, for things to make it in that list they must be stupid and which one rates 9,435th and which one rates 105th on the stupid-meter doesn't make much of a difference.

No one likes being wrong, so where opportunistic, laugh at the stupid beliefs to those that believe it and maybe they'll think critically for a moment. That's the only value worth taking note of here.

Not defending religion here, but a lot of high horsing going on.

So, did you guys know that a recent discovery has called into question one of the 2 main assumptions underlying the big bang? The cosmological principle to be exact, which means that we have to revisit that assumption and the big bang theory again to account for this.

Now, if after hearing this ur "belief" in the current existing big bang model was not refuted or shaken, IE if u still believe 100% that the big bang created the universe...then technically ur a baby step closer to being like everyone who believes in a religion.

"Well thats a bit of a leap!" you might say, however if when faced with scientific evidence contradicting an assumption needed for the big bang theory u don't adjust or modify ur belief system, ur no different than ANYONE who believes a partial truth or outright falsehood in the face of contradicting evidence.

So the next time ur explaining how much better science is at explaining the world with a religious zealot, before looking down your nose at them remember that sciences current golden child theory for the creation of the universe is being challenged and so maybe YOU shouldn't be so certain about your beliefs.

FYI I'm still fairly certain that a big bang type event created the observable universe.
