Huge chunks of ice fall from 1600 foot TV tower

cyberscythesays...

Heh, reminds me of last winter. In Toronto, huge sheets of ice were falling off of the CN Tower which, you may recall, was the tallest freestanding structure in the world. A nearby hotel gave out hard hats and escorted its customers.

MarineGunrocksays...

I would sue whoever owned that tower for putting my life and property in danger (if my shit got destroyed from the ice)

They should have some sort of preventive measure for keeping ice from forming. (pump hot water through tube up structure?)

pump hot water through tubes?
who is going to invest that much money in a radio tower to prevent this from happening once every 10 years?
oh and car insurance should cover this.

rychansays...

regarding the hot water- that's just way too much of an investment for a very, very rare occurrence. Also, I think the ice is falling from the guy wires, although I could be wrong.

Haha yeah MG, because the government is responsible for every goddamn thing in your life. How about some personal responsibility? Jesus christ, maybe don't leave your car parked under a huge unenclosed structure during an ice storm?

Crosswordssays...

"how about *eia too, for the "heads up, it's coming right at us" and failure to move?"

haha no kidding, I was waiting for a Darwin moment. "Hey huge spear like chunks of ice are falling from the sky, let's go stand under it and film it!"

*nsfw

We had a horrible ice storm in the 70's. A girl I knew got hit by a falling branch while walking in from her car and sustained major head injuries.

MG isn't asking to much. Though it does look like it is falling from the guy wires (the cables that keep it upright) All that would have to be done is a small cage around the top half of the tower, so that the available space for ice to form is smaller, so you get more, smaller chunks instead of a few large ones.I wouldn't say that this will only happen every 10 years. At that height, its going to be allot colder, so ice will more rapidly form.

@ Buzdos, - chill out. No need to get all but-hurt.

@ dannym - Wtf? gay guys? what the hell are you talking about?

budzossays...

Yeah guys let's spend a whole bunch of money making everything just a little bit more safe. Of course it makes sense to increase the burden on major capital expenditures in order to eliminate the threat of minor insurance claims from something that happens every ten years. Makes total sense. I'm the asshole.

Or you could just be aware of your environment and take a little personal responsibility.

FWIW my mom spent 4 years campaigning against a huge radio tower in my home town. I basically just wanted her to STFU the whole time, because, come on mom, it's going up no matter how much noise you make.

@budzos

I fall on my knees before our corporate masters, and beg forgiveness. I have seen the light. We all need to take greater personal responsibility, because it makes it easier for our great multi-national owners to shirk theirs in the name of profit.
