GT Countdown - Top Ten Scariest Video Games

Pretty good list. I'm glad to see Fatal Frame on there, and high on the list. I couldn't agree more about Silent Hill being number one. Anyone who's played through that (and Silent Hill 2 was awesome as well) could see why. It did everything right as far as horror goes, and was very original about it, too.

Plus, Psychological horror > Jump-out-and-scare-you horror

No doubt silent hill as number 1 i could play Silent Hill 3 it was just too gory and horrifying for me. Never heard of Fatal Frame but thought that maybe "F.E.A.R" or "Condemned" would be in the top 10 maybe there not outright horrors but they have there moments.

i was just remembering playing silent hill with the lights off, and how it scared the poo out of me the other day and thinking that i was probably just a big wuss. i'm glad that i wasn't the only one.

Silent Hill was scary as heck, yeah. I liked Condemned a lot, although I thought it would have been scarier if there hadn't been quite to many lesser bad guys. I mean, the sense of realism as a framed cop running for his life is kinda diminished when you use a steel pipe and a taser to beat the crap out of upwards of 50 guys who randomly decide to attack you. It's like bumfights on crack.

F.E.A.R. was definitely creepy, but not as scary as the rest of these. Nothing in the game meant to be scary could actually kill you and the jolts were great but far between. The John Woo action style ROCKED, though.

Well, I think F.E.A.R. certainly wouldn't beat most of these but I do have to question F.E.A.R. not being on it when something like "Alien Vs. Predator" is. Honestly, it's almost comical that they say not being able to hear things due to console limitation, and enemies behind you not making sounds is scary. It sounds more annoying than anything.

If you don't think AvP should be on this list, you obviously haven't played it. Granted, I never played the one on the Jaguar, but the 2 that came out on PC terrified me. It's not just jump-out-at-you scary, either. Some of the most tense moments of gaming I've ever played were spent watching that motion detector and seeing the blip get closer and closer...

Omnithrope, I asked the same question, and realized that Silent Hill being number one meant it's sequels as well. I think when it comes in terms of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, they're just picking the first one to represent the entire series.

Also, I never played AvP myself, but I showed the same doubts to a friend of mine. And all he had to say was "No man, it DEFINITELY deserves that spot." It wasn't the fact that you couldn't hear them. It was more or less the fact that the entire Marine campaign you were completely on edge about whether or not something was actually going to come after you. I heard that no other game has ever been able to create such a nerve-racking atmosphere.

Karaidl, I couldn't agree more about FEAR's 'John Woo' style. Also, it's hard to find a game out even still today that can match just how fun the AI was, with their really smart tactics. But it's short-end, in my opinion, that it became too much of a pattern of the same two formulas. Like, there were two different games in one, one that was a smart tactical shooter, and one that was a ghost horror game. It got to the point where it was basically "Okay, this part is a shooter, so I can expect nothing scary to happen here", "This part is scary, so I don't have to expect any bad guys coming around to kill me anytime soon". Over and over, without mixing it up too much. Too formulaic.

Resident Evil GC(sometimes called REmake) is for the Gamecube. I bought it along with RE 0 and RE 4, 10th anniversary edition package. Warning for the wary, it's very scary & very tough. Far tougher than the original as both Jill & Chris.
